When India’s biggest telcos recently demanded that the government auction satellite broadband spectrum instead of allocating it, their target was clearly Musk’s satellite-based internet service. But what does it have that they don’t?

He had seized the 17,000-foot ‘Peak 5140’ during the Kargil war hours earlier. Journalists who covered that war also relayed despatches to their offices via Iridium satellite phones that had been launched worldwide late in 1998.
