Gen Z has sparked change in the advertising industry, including by urging brands to uphold their values and move with authenticity. Gen Zers are also transforming the traditional corporate career journey into a modern, independent and personalized path. These new ideals are giving rise to a different method of work: freelancing.
Working on a project-by-project basis gives freelancers complete control over what work they take on, where they work and how packed their schedule is.
A May 2024 survey by Upwork found that “across all Gen Z freelancers, 39% identify as Portfolio Careerists, 26% as Independent Consultants, 24% as Moonlighters, 7% as Temporary “Gig” Workers and 3% as Company Founders.” Many independent contractors—who are full-time freelancers—have multiple clients and perform a wide range of jobs. Moonlighters (part-time freelancers) work nights or weekends along with their day job. While the flexibility of freelancing has always attracted some in the workforce, it is the leading form of employment among Gen Zers.
