Hello from Gates Archive in Seattle
👋🏽
@Brewster Kahle I work as a Sales Analyst for GitHub focusing on our advanced security product. We just began offering our services for non-profits. I am wondering if our product could have prevented this attack.
I appreciate that this DDOS attack has put a lot on your plates that you don't need. And appreciate the updates and all the work you are doing to recover.
Thank you for the update. Will there be further updates or opportunities for discussion/questions on the post cyber attack recovery as part of this forum?

Internet Archive Responds to Appellate Opinion in Hachette v. Internet Archive: https://blog.archive.org/2024/09/04/internet-archive-responds-to-appellate-opinion/
Do you have any hints about the motivations behind the attack? how different was it from the previous attack?
The ddos was the same— and we had put in defences so it took a while to configure but basically worked. What was new was a defacement of some javascript. This caused us to take the site down and assess and improve. Then resume services as we feel safe to do so.
Internet Archive Responds to Recording Industry Lawsuit Targeting Obsolete Media: https://blog.archive.org/2023/08/14/internet-archive-responds-to-recording-industry-lawsuit-targeting-obsolete-media/
Why is it important to preserve 78s: https://blog.archive.org/2024/08/26/vanishing-culture-on-78s/
I'm curious about how the new CA law will affect digital publishing (it basically says that you cannot say you are "purchasing/buying/owning" digital products that you cannot access offline/without DRM) It basically clarifies something we've all known- you don't actually "own" a lot of your digital material. It makes it clearer for consumers.
Yes! It seems like a very small beginning to helping the public better understand how different these digital offerings are from traditional physical media.
I am curious if anyone knows who was behind that bill? Could be the beginning of a broader coalition to do more work at the state level…
Ty!
We are looking for more partners for doing peer-to-peer interlibrary loan.

So many video games that have vanished from the 70s and 80s.
There’s a big discussion of video games in the report!
Even recently with flash becoming obsolete
There’s an essay on Flash in the report as well!
I recently saw the term "data trauma" used to describe the loss of content

You’re welcome!
Yay Elizabeth!!!
I love the ALA booths and getting to know our partners at BWB!
I’ve hung out at that booth too, and it’s a blast:-)
Elizabeth is incredible
Thank you, Elizabeth!
You’re welcome and Hi!
Yay! I have a box I haven't taken to the post office yet 🤣
Elizabeth rocks!
As one of your partner libraries digitizing using the Scribe 3 system, how do we scan offline? That's news to us. We'd very much like to keep using our Scribes, which have been dark for 8 days now. (Also, we would be interested in moving from jp2's to tiffs!)
We can follow up and see how we can help.
Hi Lindsey, I’ll reach out!
Thanks!
Armored, a la Hannibal Barca?
I love the elephant conversion! 🐘
A great tool!
Can we get access to our favorites list of books in our readers account?
When the site is back up, you can see your favorites or what you have borrowed (unless you have asked to not record this)
Thanks
Open Library has been invaluable to me in researching a book project. Thank you so much for this. I have been spreading the word. I was dumfounded when I found it was off line. BTW the search function is fantastic, especially for restricted books.
Thank you @Susan McNeill! If you are blocked, you may send me an email to mek@archive.org and I can explore if there’s a way to help you get access to what you need. Let’s keep in touch in case we can keep you in mind as we’re developing search and our futures.
Thank you. Did I say again how wonderful you all are

I might be able to get my packrat fiancé to let go of some of his super old fantasy novels if it's for the sake of preservation. ;)
Ooo yes please! We love fantasy and sci fi collections!
I have a bunch too... I'm in Canada though.
We can help, Carla ;)
Sweet!
Chris is right, Liz rocks!
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is currently working on reparative authority work for women’s names — the loss of critical access to the IA library collections focuses on how important it is to research.
I love Internet archive!!! I’ve been lost without you!!
Ya’ll are amazing! (Clickable Historical Links via Wayback Machine)

Yes! Open Library links in many cases to OCLC’s worldcat to help patrons find books in nearby libraries!

Thank you to you and the other hero presenters.
Will this recording be available as a recording or only a transcript/ and where if so?
Yes! Will share it at archive.org once up.
thanks
We Love You Wayback Machine
We serve at 1,500 requests per second on wayback, I understand.
Archive.org makes ARK identities available for all uploaded items. I use these extensively, like DOIs, for reference (rather than the plain item URLs). Can any of you at IA speak to the issue of Archive.org's attitude to ARK IDs, and the Archive's intention to continue using ARK as a part of basic infrastructure in the foreseeable future?
@Dominik Wujastyk, there are a handful of folks within the archive who may be able to discuss ARK identities and DOIs; if you have an idea/request in mind, feel free to email info@archive.org and we can try to route it to the right folks!
Wonderful, many thanks! I will do as you suggest.
Yay, IA Scholar 😁
Community Webs is such a great program (of the many described here)!
looking forward to the communitywebs page coming back online! thanks for all you do

Perfect attendance!
It's so cowardly that cybercriminals target libraries, hospitals, schools, because those are the institutions who will more often pay ransoms in order to protect their users.
Can you talk a bit about the long term maintenance of digital files?
Andrea has been so incredible to work with!
shall i email andrea for an appointment?
Ping me at loren@archive.org
sure. thanks.
Andrea is great!
Yay National Public Domain Day!!
Super psyched for National PD Day!
Jealous that the US can celebrate PD day.
Yeah, Canada extending its copyright term was such a devastation.
Where are Alaska and Hawaii on those maps?
They didn't have legislation that showed up in our dataset for the time period.

There's been some good work in serials to get some important features into contracts, but I've been shocked and concerned about how many libraries don't read their contracts or, in some cases, don't even have access to them because they live with external procurement with their parent agencies.
Thank you so much. Need to boogie. This has been wonderful.
YAAAAAYYYYY DAVID
glad the French pronunciation choice was explained. I would have got that wrong otherwise :)
We libraries should buy these. And there is foundation support for those needing some special funds for this.
Great and needed service and marketplace, gogogo!
I'm emailing my boss about BRIET right now 👀
