LAKE JACKSON — Families, friends and all those looking for something filling will have to take Luby’s off their list of places to eat in Lake Jackson; the restaurant is closing soon.
Known for its home-style meals and welcoming environment, Luby’s Cafeteria has been a go-to for years in Lake Jackson. For many, it’s where they celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and regular Sunday lunches. Situated off Highway 288, the eatery has been a mainstay for nearly 40 years, first opening its doors in 1984. News of the closure initially was announced in a statement by President Cal Gin.

“Thank YOU for dining with us here in Lake Jackson!” Gin wrote. “Unfortunately, the property has been sold, and we have been unsuccessful in negotiating a lease with the new owner. With heavy hearts, our last day of serving you will be on Thanksgiving, November 28th.”
The property had been for sale for a while, Associate Manager John Red said. The staff had always known this outcome was a possibility but hoped for the company to be able to find a new location before it came to pass.
The location almost met its demise in 2022 when it was to be sold off and turned into a Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux, but the sale fell through in 2023.
“It comes as a bit of a surprise, but the building’s been up for sale, so we always knew the possibility,” said Red, who has been with the company since 2007 and at the Lake Jackson location since 2012. “We did try to work out some leasing options. … I just couldn’t come up with anything that would be sustainable.”
The possibility of reopening elsewhere in the city or county remains on the table, but it is uncertain.
“There’s nothing official,” Red said. “I know that the company is talking to people, but there’s no official word on anything.”
This uncertainty has left many wondering about the fate of Luby’s location in Angleton. The cafeteria has a satellite location in the Central Brazoria County Business Park which depends on the Lake Jackson location for its supply, with staff transporting cooked dishes to the site every day. Without the kitchen in Lake Jackson, the Angleton location will close.
Thanksgiving has long been a significant day for the cafeteria, with many families opting to dine at Luby’s or pick up pre-ordered meals for their celebrations.
Red confirmed this tradition would continue one final time, allowing patrons to pick up packages the day before Thanksgiving.
Then, the staff will operate as usual on Thanksgiving Day before locking up for one last closing shift.
