YEONGWOL, South Korea -- A Canadian company's tungsten mine redevelopment project is raising hope in South Korea that the country can cut its dependence on China for the metal critical in producing semiconductors, electric vehicles and rockets.

Almonty Korea Tungsten Corp. (AKTC), a unit of Toronto-based Almonty Industries, on Thursday hosted a "vision declaration" event at Sangdong Mine in the eastern mountain village of Yeongwol, showcasing its plan to begin supplying tungsten to South Korea and beyond in 2026.
