Beyond a source of entertainment, video games are cultural expressions that support and influence social interactions. Games educate, bring enjoyment, and encourage reflection! They are intricate achievements of coding and creative works of art. Histories, ranging from the personal to the global, are reinterpreted and retold for broad audiences in playful, digital experiences. The medium also magnifies our already complicated and confrontational relation with the past, for instance through its overreliance on violent and discriminatory game mechanics. My research at QUT focuses on how an open virtual environment can contextualise citizen driven history research. The environment will be the Victoria Park football ground and surrounding streets as they were in 1979. Visitors will be invited to leave photos, video and narratives about the time and place within the virtual environment for others to view, discuss and review. I'll be using the bottom-up approach of design thinking to create a 3D space that facilitates and 'brings together' layers of grassroots history. On a geeky note, I'll be using Maya for geometry, Substance Painter and Designer for texturing, USD asset packaging (so good!!), and Unreal 5 to create a first person game and/or VR application.

This week, Formula E High Voltage (https://lnkd.in/ghfYdV7h) launches a pre-sale on 17th October, before the full game release on the 19th. The game itself is currently in Early Access, with players already competing in tournaments daily, and having a blast, playing the very first Formula E game experience. As a Web3 title, this launch delivers on a number of concepts that Web3 game builders and creators envisioned when we looked at the possibility of what decentralisation, ownership, and interoperability means. ✅ Ownership: Players and fans of the REVV ecosystem from F1 Delta Time are able to leverage their swapped assets from that game. Holders receiving access to an exclusive Allowlists based on the rarity of the asset the swapped. Dedication during the journey being recognised. ✅ Interoperability: NFTs from Torque Drift 2 from Grease Monkey Games and Torqies from Matt Solomon's Torque Squad, are also being recognised with access to Allowlists. Although these are still NFTs from titles within the REVV ecosystem, their primary function is elsewhere, beyond High Voltage. Meaning a wholly new game is granting further value to owned assets. ✅ Decentralisation: The game itself, and the High Voltage game assets (cars, drivers, etc...) are on the Flow blockchain. But the Allowlist structure in place recognises assets from other blockchains, primarily Polygon in this case. Due to the assets being decentralised, application layers can piece together ownership. In addition to the above, and delivering on the benefits of decentralisation and ownership, we mesh together past-possibility with current Web3 development maturity: in that the game is not a distant promise, but there playable today. When the general market and wider economic realities push against progress, it's important to highlight milestones. We are still very much moving forward. With just two weeks to the opening ceremony on Friday 26th, we’re getting very excited for Paris!!! The Games have always had a special place in our ORRECO story. Members of our team have been fortunate to support athletes since the 2000 Games in Sydney In 2021, Orreco helped more than 100 elite athletes prepare for Tokyo. They achieved phenomenal results, with 17 medals won across various sports. From making music on his old MIDI keyboard to now working behind the scenes on some of Australia’s most exciting films, Curtin University Film & TV graduate Gavin Repton is pursuing his childhood passions one film at a time. 📽️🎬 For the past seven years, Gavin has paved an impressive career in the film & TV industry as a freelance Location Sound Recordist and Drone Pilot, working on projects for BBC One, Discovery Channel, Channel 7 & 9, Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia and Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Recently, Gavin finished working on fellow Curtin graduate Zak Hilditch’s feature film, ‘We Bury The Dead’, and has just wrapped up filming with Australian Director, Bruce Beresford on his upcoming film, 'Overture'. I chose Curtin because its film and TV course had a great reputation. Having access to audio studios, editing suites and high-quality educators made all the difference. The friends I made at university are the reason why I’m still in the industry. Making and maintaining those personal and professional connections is a huge skill to learn for someone wanting to have a successful freelance career. 𝐐. As some of you know, I've been studying at Curtin University since 2021. I decided to try my hand at a bachelor's degree with a double major – Digital and Social Media, and Professional Writing and Publishing. I've thoroughly enjoyed my study, which is now coming to a close. My final assignment is about to be handed in! As part of this final subject, I've been working in a small team to produce a short instructional video and associated social media accounts. We also created a website, which is still a work in progress. This project has gone hand-in-hand with my 'day job', which involves working in the public library sector in South Australia. I'm currently employed as a library officer, specialising in digital services. That means you can often find me helping people with low digital literacy skills as they navigate the increasingly important processes of the 'online world'. So many of our services are going online only now, which is leaving some people behind. My role at the library is to alleviate some of the stress they feel as they learn new and sometimes daunting skills. So, it probably won't surprise you that our video revolves around the topic of digital literacy. Learning how to use smartphones and being comfortable and confident to do so helps people engage with technology. The more they engage, the more comfortable they become. Starting with something that to many of us is 'simple' is a first step in growing their confidence. You'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) how many people I see at the library who fear their devices. They're afraid they'll break them if they press the wrong thing. Some are even afraid they'll break the internet. Building trust and confidence and making them feel comfortable is something I love to do. Our project is simple. It's a short 2 1/2 minute video that demonstrates how to take a photograph using an iPhone. What's the old adage? Every journey starts with a single step. This is us helping people take that first step. A step towards confidence that can help them become comfortable with their smartphones. That confidence can eventually help them engage with the growing number of government and non-government services that are now wholly online. Two newly funded space research projects are bringing together University of Auckland and Australian researchers to collaborate to foster innovation in space communication and the responsible use of space. One of the two projects will see Te Pūnaha Ātea - Space Institute at the Faculty of Engineering collaborate with Curtin University and Nova Systems Australia and New Zealand to support the development of the SatPing initiative. The project, led by Professor Roberto Armellin, seeks to enhance the responsible use of space by improving the management of space traffic through innovative technology. Effective space traffic management requires precise information about the location of objects in orbit, traditionally obtained from ground and space-based sensors like radar and optical devices. The SatPing initiative plans to use small tracking beacons on objects in orbit, where these chips will send radio signals to Earth, allowing precise tracking of their location. This past week has been a whirlwind of discovery and challenge as I dove deeper into my React project for Holberton School! The adventure started with setting up my HP Spectre in a dual-boot configuration, juggling Windows and the steadfast Linux Fedora Silverblue. But this was just the beginning. 🔍Exploring the Immutable Fedora Silverblue's immutable system has been a central theme in my journey. For those unfamiliar, an immutable system like Silverblue maintains an unchangeable OS image. Modifications or application installations lead to the creation of a new OS layer, added to the 'ostree', rather than altering the original system. It's a fascinating paradigm shift, offering robust stability and security. 🐳 Docker Dilemmas and Solutions A significant hurdle was getting Docker to cooperate within this immutable landscape. Traditional installation approaches either clashed with the system's immutability or posed security risks. The solution? Docker's rootless mode. Running Docker without root privileges, it leverages namespaces and VPNs to create a safe, contained environment for applications - all while maintaining user-level access. 🛠️ Client Terminal Challenges in VS Code A key learning curve was working with the integrated terminal in Visual Studio Code. Running VS Code as a Flatpak on Silverblue presented unique challenges, especially when trying to integrate tools like Docker and toolbox containers. The terminal, confined within Flatpak's sandbox, often didn't behave as expected. The solution? Embracing Silverblue's toolbox and regular terminals for tasks requiring deeper system integration. This approach, while stepping outside the VS Code environment, ensured smoother workflows and better compatibility with Silverblue's principles. 👨‍💻 From Figma to React The core of the project was bringing a React application to life from a Figma design. The bulk of the project included hand-crafting custom CSS for each component of the website to mimick the look of the Figma file. Running the development environment within toolbox containers underscored the power and flexibility of containerized development. It's a testament to how tools like Docker and toolbox can complement an immutable system like Silverblue, fostering a secure and efficient development process. Looking for a fresh take on fatherhood? Unlike many media portrayals, the Australian animated series, 'Bluey,' challenges stereotypes and provides valuable lessons. In this article, Lawson Murray (President of Scripture Union, Canada) shares 5 practical ways the Church can support and uplift fathers, inspired by Bandit's example. 1: Teach and model biblical principles. To rightly shape a father’s competency and parental involvement, we must energetically teach and model biblical principles and practices. 2: Affirm roles and responsibilities. Many fathers lack confidence, leaving mothers to do a disproportionate portion of the parenting. We must, therefore, teach fathers the Lord's plan for them to provide for, protect, train, and love their children. 3: Create momentum. Honour fathers (Exodus 20:12). The incredible life-giving contribution a father can make in his family should be regularly, not rarely, celebrated and advanced. 4: Encourage play. When fathers play with their children, they become more patient, creative, thoughtful and dedicated. 5: Call fathers to account. A new project by UOW researchers to develop battery systems that can withstand extremely cold temperatures, including in outer space, has been awarded a prestigious national grant. 🎉 Professor Jung Ho Kim and Professor Konstantin Konstantinov received a National Intelligence and Security Discovery Research Grant from the Australian Government’s Office of National Intelligence. It is the first time a UOW project has secured these highly competitive grants, underlining the researchers’ exceptional capabilities in battery technology. The project will see the design and advancement of an innovative battery device able to operate in temperatures below -40℃. The goal is to explore new battery configurations using solid electrolytes, as opposed to the liquids or pastes used in existing batteries, and eliminates carbon-based graphite used in traditional anodes. “Batteries are crucial for extended space research due to their energy storage and high-power output. However, they face challenges like limited energy capacity and weight constraints. “As space exploration progresses, developing compact, lightweight batteries with high-energy output for cold environments remains a key challenge,” Professor Kim said. #UOWResearch #UOWEngineering
