An off-duty New York City police officer was shot several times last night in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn and was in stable condition early today, the police said.

The officer's identity was not immediately released, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear, Sgt. Cory Cuneo, a police spokesman, said. The shooting took place between 11:30 P.M. and 11:45 P.M., in front of 2107 East 19th Street, between Avenue U and Avenue V, said Sergeant Cuneo.

He said that, according to witnesses, the officer was shot several times in his legs, arms and torso while either leaving or entering a vehicle. The officer was conscious but not coherent when found, Sergeant Cuneo added, and he was taken to Coney Island Hospital. Sergeant Cuneo said that the police knew of no motive but that robbery and carjacking were being explored.
