I have been talking in recent days with many former colleagues, both Canadians and non-Canadians, about the situation in Québec for VFX.
First of all, keep it up. Sending lots of love and positivity to all of you. ❤
But... but...
I want to go back in time to 2018 when Legault was chosen as Premier.
I remember I was at Cinesite, and it was my first year in Canada. As I always do, because I’m passionate about politics, I read up and informed myself about all the parties and candidates for the elections.
Well, Legault was CLEARLY the worst choice.
The first red flag was that, like Trump and Berlusconi, Legault was not a politician, but just someone with a lot of money who wanted to get into politics.
So basically, he wanted to have power in his hands, instead of being there for the good of the people.
This is not something to underestimate but actually a really important thing that makes a difference.
His program was written very poorly, was confusing, and overall, full of racist and nationalist content. It had a lot in common with the Italian and French ultra-right wings of Salvini and Le Pen.
But when I talked in the studio about this, just to make conversation, there were a lot of people enthusiastic about Legault.
This was curious to me.
Why vote for the worst person in the pool? Why make the same mistakes as Italy and the USA? Well, the people in Québec have voted for Legault twice. Be aware.
All the things now happening in our industry were, from the beginning, very clear in Legault’s program.
He didn’t hide his intentions.
So why vote for someone who could basically destroy the economy?
Unfortunately, people in Québec, in their effort to preserve French culture, have suffered a sort of brainwashing over the last two decades, which has slowly led the region to almost completely rewrite history to justify nationalism and make people blind. But there is a problem here.
Nationalism doesn’t fit well with Canadian demographics. Canada, and especially Québec, the largest region in Canada, needs people from other countries.
Any choice made following the ideal of nationalism will always be wrong. It will be even more wrong in a region with a low population density like Québec, where a large part of the economy is based on global industries like Cinema and Television.
So, this long post is to say that now it is too late to cry.
This is a hard lesson about the importance of understanding politics well and having a better vision of the future by learning from the past. It’s important to keep an open mind and not close it within geographic borders.
