What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We’ve been inviting players to playtest Timberborn since the very first months of its development in 2018. Beaver city-builders aren’t exactly an established genre, and your voice helps us decide what works and what doesn’t. Thanks to that feedback, the game's core is here, it’s fun to play, and we want to make it available for everyone.

We will now be adding more content ahead of the full release, and Early Access players will help us choose where to go next. During that time, Timberborn will still have that work-in-progress smell of fresh lumber.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect the Early Access to last at least a year. While we have ideas for what needs to be done before the full release (see below), players’ feedback affects that and we’re ready to put in additional time.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Timberborn has been evolving based on what players want and that remains the plan for Early Access development. The players’ suggestions dictate the specifics of what we add next.

Whether that means additional beaver factions, more water-related gameplay, an expanded science system, new resources or fresh food chains – or something entirely different such as a trading system – depends on the feedback we receive.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“You may pick from two playable beaver factions and there’s a total of 100+ buildings, most of them faction-exclusive. There are 13 maps included in the game, and you can create your own map using the built-in editor or download one of the maps shared by other players.

You’ll be playing an endless survival mode where you expand your beaver colony. The world alternates between temperate weather, ever-deadlier droughts, and seasons of toxic waste flowing down the rivers. You can choose the difficulty, including a custom difficulty mode.

All core mechanics are here but may require further iterations. That includes vertical architecture, terraforming, 3D water physics, irrigation, food chains, power grids, district system, well-being system, day and night cycles, beaver bots, end-game monuments, and official mod support.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“As the game develops, we may increase the price during or after Early Access. There might be seasonal discounts during Early Access, including a launch discount for early adopters.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Before releasing major updates, we test the new content on Timberborn’s experimental branch, open to all players. We read all feedback on all our channels, including an official Discord server with 35,000+ users where we hang out with the community every day. For the bugs, we’ve got an in-game crash reporting tool and a public bug tracker with upvoting functionality. We’re also working with our community on the official Timberborn Wiki. Thanks to the official mod support, more and more player-made content is available each day, keeping things fresh.”

This game deserves to go down in the same tier as the other top colony sim/management games. I do wonder whether it will be able to hit that mainstream appeal - as the premise is a little 'wacky' for a mainstream audience, but even if it doesn't, this game shines as an incredible example of taking a beloved concept, and adding LAYERS of depth to it. The water management, building process, districts and system for beaver happiness are all ingenious and work together seamlessly.

This game is phenomenal, made infinitely better with mod support (coming officially to a stable branch patch near you soon) and deserves all of the praise that it gets. I've already played far more than 60 hours - more like ~200 so far, and as yet it has never gotten old.

There are a few tiny aspects that could use a little improvement, things like storing energy later game without mods can be a pain, but given that this is still early access, this level of "improvement" is so minimal that there are fully released games with far more egregious issues.

Easily worth buying this game - if you see it on sale? It's a must buy.

Get ready to sink your teeth into this, and dam the rest of your life as your pool of love for this game grows and spreads till your life is consumed by the lush vegetation and the pitter patter and squeaks of tiny beaver kit feet running up and down your spiral staircase of beaver homes.

What can I say, one of the best city building games with a fun twist and cute beavers. The devs are active and engage with the community, listen to feedback and improve the game with each patch. Worth the price for sure, if you get it on sale it's a no-brainer.

I love this game! I have never played another game like it. It is the most easy to grasp but hard to master city builder I have ever played! If you like city building survival games, with cute little beavers, that gets constant love from its players. This is the game for you!
I have played more than 1,000 hours, just get the game...

More than just a beaver dam

Build a city with beavers, for beavers.
A fresh take on city builders. Build houses, crop fields and water pumps for the basic needs.
But be warned of the recurring drought.
Also your beaver have special needs, that need to be fulfilled to be happy.
As for building, your options are near limitless.

It's "okay" I guess. I enjoyed setting up my first settlement until I realized you can only build in a finite area without building an entirely new district that requires relocation of workers and setting up an entirely new supply chain. This wasn't clearly explained in the tutorial and it's not obvious where the area ends that you can no longer build in. Setting up a new district should be explained better as it is apparently rather complicated and requires research to connect 2 districts. Overall, still needs some work.

I fired it up to take a look, started the tutorial and literally 7 hours later had to drag myself away to go to bed. I haven't had one of those "Crikeys, it's 4 am" games for a while but this is definitely one of them. Fairly standard city builder concepts but this time it's compelling and well rounded. Thoroughly enjoying it. Gets a thumbs up from me.

Incredibly addictive little game, I had been looking for a good city building game that scratched "that" itch. I had high hopes for Cities Skyline 2, then my heart was shattered, but then came those little beavers, and I've been having a ton of fun with them.

The water simulation gameplay really adds a unique dimension to the game that I had never seen before, and it adds a lot of depth to the game itself.

I'll admit that the UX may require a bit more work (It's quite intimidating at first), but they keep on improving the game regularly, so... highly recommended !
