70% of Japanese Companies Plan To Increase Pay Scales Approximately 70% of Japanese companies plan to increase pay scales in fiscal year 2024, according to a recent survey conducted by the Finance Ministry. The survey, which collected responses from roughly 1,100 companies across Japan from March to this month, indicated that 70.7% of firms aim to raise their pay scales, marking an increase of 6.3 percentage points from the previous year. Small and medium-sized enterprises showed a notable rise of 8.8 points to 63.1% in planning pay-scale increases, surpassing the 3.2-point rise among larger corporations. The survey found that 59.8% of companies are considering pay-scale hikes of 3% or more, a significant jump of 23.4 points. Additionally, 36.5% of firms expect total increases in pay scales and regular pay to reach or exceed 5%, nearly double the figure from the previous year. The primary reason cited for these increases was to boost employee motivation, improve working conditions, and reduce employee turnover. This was followed by responses to inflation and efforts to attract new employees. However, 50.2% of small and medium-sized businesses reported challenges in passing on increased labor costs to their product and service pricing, often due to client misunderstandings. About 40% of firms continue to face labor shortages despite wage increases. An industry official noted that ongoing population decline and low wages contribute to these shortages, while another from the industrial machinery sector called for more flexibility in work-hour regulations. Cameras to Smartphones: Adapting to Market Changes For my travels, I used to carry a bulky DSLR or a more recent mirrorless camera. However, in recent years, it has become quite uncommon to see people with traditional cameras. These devices were great for their time, capturing high-quality photos, but the trend has clearly shifted towards smartphones. Despite the relentless marketing campaigns by camera manufacturers promoting professional photography, modern smartphones can record 4K video and share it instantly without the need for extensive photo processing. What has disrupted the camera industry? In my opinion, it's the market shift and the inability of producers to adapt. Camera manufacturers may have invested too much in traditional models to pivot effectively, even when the future direction is evident. Professional gear still has its niche, but for the average consumer, a smartphone is all they need to capture and share moments instantly. The quality of photos with AI assistance on smartphones can rival traditional cameras, and we are no longer as excited by high-quality photos as we once were. This scenario is not unique to cameras. It reminds me of bookstores selling print books and magazines—a classic example of an industry struggling to adapt. I've been receiving a lot of questions lately about what I’m up to after leaving my full-time role at Decathlon. The transition from a corporate career to fully immersing myself in the SMU MITB program has been both refreshing and incredibly rewarding. Leaving a stable position to dive back into student life may seem unconventional, but it’s been a luxury and an opportunity I cherish deeply. After all these years of working, returning to a learning environment and focusing on personal growth daily has been a unique experience. In the past three months, I've had the chance to: 1.
