WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 — Mohammad Khatami, the former president of Iran, made an unusual appearance at Washington’s National Cathedral on Thursday evening, urging religious tolerance and political dialogue while protesters chanted and blasted horns outside.

Mr. Khatami is on a five-city speaking tour of the United States as the guest of private organizations, although the State Department, which approved his visa, assisted with security. Iranian diplomats in this country are usually restricted to activities at the United Nations.

The line for his speech, which drew an estimated 1,200 people, formed two hours in advance.
