NEW HARTFORD — Cosimo Tangorra Jr., superintendent of schools for the New Hartford Central School District, is retiring and resigning from the position.

At a Tuesday, June 18, board of education meeting, Tangorra announced his intentions to step down effective March 4, 2025. The board accepted his resignation.

During the superintendent’s report portion of the meeting, Tangorra read his resignation letter.

“My time with the New Hartford Central School District has been personally and professionally gratifying and provided me the occasion to grow as a leader,” he said. “I was given the opportunity to work with educated educators and a wonderful student body. I feel privileged to have rounded out my career with the New Hartford Central School District.”

He said he will work with the school board, leadership team and community as they search for a new superintendent.

Tangorra has a long career in education, having served as a teacher, administrator, and deputy commissioner of education for the state of New York. Tangorra has also been superintendent of Central Valley, Ilion, Oppenheim-Ephratah, Trumansburg, and Niskayuna school districts.

Tangorra joined the New Hartford Central School District in July 2021, after former Superintendent Robert Nole left the position in April 2021.

The board also thanked its retiring faculty, staff and board members for their service and wished them farewell.

The retirees are: Pam King, outgoing board president; James Stephens, longtime board member; Mary Mandel, assistant superintendent for business affairs; Martin Hollister, senior high band director; Kevin McCoy, senior high special education teacher; Lisa Crouch, a Myles Elementary teacher; Suzanne Gordon, a Bradley Elementary teacher; Patricia Notebaert, a Hughes Elementary teacher; Scott Gaffney, director of transportation; and Marlene Bailey, a bus aide.

The board also said goodbye to student member Aishaanya Kaushik, who is set to graduate.

In other business

  • The board recognized the Latin students who took the National Latin Exam, many of whom won awards.
  • The World Language faculty presented the New York State seal of biliteracy to several students.
  • During the public comment portion, two community members inquired about the status of the high school pool, which was closed after a piece of roof fell into the pool, necessitating repairs. Tangorra said the hope is that it will be fixed and
  • the pool can reopen in mid-August.
  • The board ratified a tentative collective bargaining agreement with the New Hartford Teachers’ Association – Administrators Group.
  • The board approved a resolution that authorizes the district to purchase the school buses that the community voted for in the bus proposition.
