The 2024 Climate-Friendly Supermarkets Scorecard is here! Which supermarkets are keeping cool without warming the planet? We scored the biggest chains in the U.S. on their actions to reduce emissions of climate super-polluting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Leaks of HFCs from supermarkets across the country are estimated to equal 65 billion tons of coal burned in a year. Though we’ve seen an encouraging increase in leading companies committing to make changes, they still fall short of what we really need: to phase-out these gases. Addressing methane emissions from the waste sector is key to slowing near-term warming.  Soon, the first Carbon Mapper Coalition satellite will join a growing number of technologies helping operators, regulators and other stakeholders detect and quantify waste sector emissions. By making this data accessible, we are making these emissions more actionable. In 2023, weather records keep falling like dominoes as heat records after heat records are broken every month. Copernicus, the E.U.’s climate monitoring service, and NOAA, a U.S. weather and climate monitoring agency, declared that April 2024 is the hottest April on record. The month also is the 11th month in a row of record warmth worldwide. Copernicus notes that April’s 2024 average temperature is 1.58°C warmer than the pre-industrial (1850-1900) average temperatures for April, and NOAA says that the month is 1.32°C above the 20th-century average. #ClimateArticles #ClimateAdaptation #climatechange https://lnkd.in/geYztBdU

This week’s Future Gas Strategy announcement is the latest example of a comprehensive win for the fossil fuel lobby at the expense of our #climate and the road to #netzero. To improve integrity and accountability in the transition, the UN calls for non-state actors to live and breathe the values of their public net zero claims. This means pushing for ambitious and forward‑thinking net zero and helping to enable positive government action on climate. But what about the government themselves? If corporations are being called on to increase their transparency, so too should the government. Current lobbying practices in our federal parliament allow for disproportionate influence by powerful corporations and industry associations whose goal is to slow down the transition. In the same week the government is being criticised for releasing a strategy that read as if it was written by giant gas corporations, the Senate released its report into lobbying in parliament that essentially recommends staying with the status quo. With no plans to curb the undue influence of corporations intent on lobbying against climate action. Professor Joo-Cheong Tham from Melbourne Law School, and a member of Climate Integrity’s expert network, breaks down the areas where the Senate report and recommendations fall short of addressing the changes needed to increase accountability and strengthen our democracy. https://lnkd.in/gttDUnAk We need to level the playing field across the board to increase transparency on both sides to stamp out the anti-climate influence and speed up the work required to get to net zero.
