Earlier this month, we created an extraordinary achievement at "You Can Save a Life!" as a continuation of a project we started back in September that aimed to train first-year medical students at Al-Azhar University on "Emergency and Basic Life Support". The first part of the project began with 220 students back in September and now the second part targeted 130 students to have a total of 350 first-year medical students who are trained to save lives and train lay people in the Palestinian community on basic lifesaving FA. I'm more than happy and honoured to be part of the team behind this fantastic project. I've served as a coordinator, instructor, and lecturer throughout this training course, and what an outstanding experience it was. Many thanks to the team behind it all and to our great instructors who supported the practical side of the training week. I am deeply moved by Ali’s powerful words and the urgency of the message he conveys in his article. I am honoured to share my latest article for T1International, addressing the grave and severely overlooked challenges faced by people living with type 1 diabetes in Gaza. The significance of this article for me is that I am not writing it just as a journalist, nor just as a researcher, but as a global diabetes advocate who has been fighting diabetes for 10 years. Throughout these years, every time I use any of my diabetes supplies, I am reminded of those who cannot afford proper healthcare. Having lived in different countries with varying healthcare systems, I have noticed that the better the healthcare I receive, the more acutely I feel for those with non-communicable diseases who do not have access to similar care. I never feel privileged. One area where I have always felt particularly helpless is Gaza. People living with diabetes in Gaza already suffered from inadequate healthcare that did not meet their needs for proper diabetes management due to the severe restrictions imposed on the region for years and years. They suffer in silence. For the last few months, looking at my insulin, glucose tabs, continuous glucose monitoring device, and the shelf in the fridge where I store my insulin, I am overwhelmed by guilt. I planned and worked on this article for months, contacting and pitching it to various international organisations that share a passion for the cause of protecting people living with diabetes everywhere. I was fortunate to collaborate with the exceptionally dedicated T1International team who share my passion for diabetes advocacy and calling for #insulin4all. It was a pleasure to participate as a panelist in yesterday's International Diabetes Federation event, “Blue Circle Talk: Advocacy in Times of Crisis.” The discussion underscored a vital message: with diabetes and disasters, it's not "if" but "when." This highlights the need for prevention and preparation at every level of the health system. We must be accountable, establish feedback loops, and bridge the gap among all stakeholders, especially those living with diabetes. A key takeaway was that access to healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. We must protect, respect, and fulfil this right, ensuring it is never politicised or used as a weapon. Lived experiences are crucial in guiding international efforts and alleviating pressures during crises. I extend my thanks to the International Diabetes Federation for having me and to my fellow panellists for their valuable insights.
