Why I think G5 was cancelled: and no it has nothing to do with the fans, the content, or the haters. (I am not an employee or have anything to do with Hasbro so take it with a grain of salt but this is what I’ve observed from a business standpoint as a 4th year animation student)

Hasbro is struggling financially. It was revealed recently that Boulder Media was originally going to animate Tell Your Tale for them but the sold the company as one of their properties, most likely in a desperate attempt to get some money.

MYM was handed off to eOne studios before it was finally settled that Atomic Cartoons would do it. Because eOne had it first, AC were left with this half-done project with probably minimal briefing and a tight deadline. I recommend this video: invidious.poast.org/8vQT84fEhOA?si=KURC…

This next part is more my opinion so take it with a grain of salt: Netflix probably wasn’t a great choice of platform for the main series. Or there’s just better ones they could’ve picked. I think it might’ve got more views on Disney+ because that’s what families have nowadays.

The decision to cancel Tell Your Tale wasn’t an overnight thing, the first sign they knew they were in danger was when they changed to biweekly uploads. I think by that point they knew they weren’t going to finish it. They ran some numbers and realized they had to pay people.

Overall, Hasbro is a TOY company and didn’t produce many toys for G5, and that’s a problem. Again I think they didn’t make many because in the end they simply couldn’t afford to, because it looks like they had plans for things (remember the doll line??) that never came to be.

In production, you get a budget for the thing you want to make. You run costs for materials, workers, factories, retailers and all that. And at the end, you’re faced with a question: are you confident this will make you a profit or at least breakeven. Hasbro must’ve just said no.

This isn’t the fans’ fault or anything, the company was clearly just afraid to take risks because of the uncertainty that came with it while they were starting to lose a lot of money.

What WOULD’VE worked, at least I think, is if they gave G5 the same collectibles treatment they gave G4 and their OTHER IPs like Littlest Pet Shop, because this was a winning formula before and they just didn’t try it. Blind bags, mini figures, brushables..

For clarification: I know they made G5 brushables, but the way they were done wasn’t in the collectible formula where they were individually sold, and they never really went outside main cast. Historically this was the logic behind “MY little pony” - you pick the one for you!

In general I think having two g5 shows at once was a bit ambitious for where the company was financially. If they invested in one and budgeted it well, be it Mym or TYT, and made toys for it, maybe it would still be alive and kicking today.

Tell Your Tale evidently got a lot of views on YouTube, they had a market, they had a dedicated fan base with disposable income, but ultimately they were too afraid to take risks. Why do you think we’re seeing g4 merch around again? Because they knew it worked and they’re broke.

So NO. G5 didn’t get cancelled because it was “bad” or because it wasn’t as well received as G4. We’re not the target market anyways as adults, and plenty of kids shows are doing well without our influence aren’t they? It was simply corporate fumbles.

This is an awful fate for any animated show to have, the state of animation is so worrying these days. But g5 fans, because of I’ve been seeing the posts the past few days, I hate to be a downer but I think whatever teams worked on TYT have been long disbanded at this point.

Don’t be a SaveMLP, don’t harass people who used to be staff on a now-dead show. I think whatever episodes we’re getting now are months old at this point. You can share to the world how you loved it, and tribute it, but remember not to be unkind to staff in hopes of reviving it.

The show died because of Hasbro, it doesnt matter how successful a show it was. Could’ve been the best show ever and still would’ve failed because of the lack of toy sales.. and toy production. So MLP fans whatever gen you love, stop attacking fellow fans, capitalism ruined this.

I’m honestly scared Hasbro are giving up on MLP after this, that we mightnt get a G6 at all, all because they were afraid to try new things.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of G5, but I’m a fan of animation, and I love MLP as a franchise. It deserved so much better than to die without a conclusive ending. Be kind to your fellow fans. Thank you everyone who worked on g5 ❤️ Hoof to Heart

ONE MORE THING We’ve got official word from an animator source that the show was decided to be cancelled 7 months ago and most of the staff are likely gone now, as they started leaving the company in April. Read more here:

Anubis’s source says the project was “abruptly cancelled”, it was meant to have 100 episodes, and now we will only see 25 max, if not 23 or 24 as of the time I write this. This sounds like a decision a company would make in a panic after realizing they can’t fund it anymore to me
