Appears to be a compound of Classical Japanese 明る (akaru, “to brighten”) +‎ し (shi, “adjectival suffix”). This adjectival suffix forms a classical ク活用 (ku-katsuyō, “ku-adjective”).

First attested in 1689.[1]
