Level Up Your Separator Design Knowledge! Ever feel like you just pick equipment in plant design? 🫤 Well, vessel separators are your chance to shine! ✨ key rules of thumb for horizontal separator design: Weir Placement: Control oil level with a weir at 15% of the vessel length, leaving 85% for separation. The weir height is typically 50% of the vessel diameter. Vapor Space: Ensure a minimum vapor space of 1'-3" (380 mm) above the maximum liquid level, ideally near the vessel centerline. Gas-Oil-Water Separation: Design for water removal with adequate residence time and separation features. Foam Control: For foaming fluids, include extra space for foam disengagement and baffling. Mist eliminators go outside the vessel for optimal foam control. Dished Heads: Don't factor dished head volume into your vessel sizing calculations. Nozzle Placement: Locate inlet and outlet nozzles as close as possible to the vessel's tangent lines. Liquid Outlets: Use antivortex baffles on liquid outlets to prevent swirling.
