The 9th Annual Conference of the 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 (𝐀𝐏𝐒𝐍) will be held at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Hsinchu, Taiwan from August 15 to 16, 2024. The conference is collaboratively organized by NTHU, SMU Yong Pung How School of Law (SMU Law), and the American Society of International Law (ASIL)’s International Law & Technology Interest Group, of which CAIDG Deputy Director, Associate Professor Han-Wei L., is the Co-Chair. The 2024 conference focuses on the interplay between international law and comparative law in the context of data governance in the Asia-Pacific region. SF Bay Area Superior Courtroom Technology Status: Here's the scoop on the big 3: 1. San Francisco -- Large monitor with Zoom webcam, reserved for Court use. You cannot connect via HDMI to the existing system. Although you can request to share exhibits via Zoom, the monitor is not adequate for jury/courtroom viewing. A full trial presentation equipment setup is highly recommended. Wi-Fi device (hotspot) recommended. 2. Santa Clara -- Monitors installed, adequate for jury viewing. You cannot connect via HDMI cables. MS Teams is the default remote platform, and evidence may be displayed with it. Not as pretty as Zoom, but it works. Additional monitors for counsel recommended, and Wi-Fi device (hotspot) highly recommended. NOTE: This is for the newer courthouse. If you're assigned to the old courthouse, see #1 above. 3. Alameda -- Monitors installed, -plug and play evidence presentation over Zoom. Laptops are even included on counsel tables. Wi-Fi works fine, although you may want to bring a Wi-Fi device (hotspot) for additional security. Not much needed here, other than trial tech's personal setup, possibly extra audio for depo clips. Might want to add a large projector screen for better viewing. All of these are rolling trials full speed ahead, so make sure you are "Trial Ready" with local support as needed. NorCal trial techs are in high demand right now, and equipment rentals are limited, so plan ahead.

Kangstem Biotech will be attending the 'BIO International Convention 2024'(BIO USA) in San Diego, USA from June 3rd to 6th. We will hold partnership meetings with more than 20 multinational pharmaceutical companies during the event.   A Spanish dermatology specialty pharmaceutical company, a French major pharmaceutical company, and a global major pharmaceutical company have requested to discuss the clinical trial process in the U.S. and Europe after the Phase III clinical trial of ‘FURESTEM-AD® Inj.’, an atopic stem cell therapy, in Korea.   Interest in ‘FURESTEM-OA Kit Inj.’, which received MRI-based imaging evaluation results for the low-dose arm of the Phase 1 trial in April, is also high. Meetings with a number of European Big Pharma and Korean pharmaceutical companies are also planned, focusing on the results of pain relief in knee osteoarthritis and structural improvement, including cartilage regeneration and inflammation reduction responses.   New pipeline organoids will also be in the mix. Kangstem Biotech recently applied for a Class 1 regenerative medicine license from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, based on cord blood stem cells. This license will enable the company to produce and supply allogeneic cord blood stem cells to Japanese medical institutions for the treating atopic patients.   The Japanese regenerative medicine market is predominantly focused on autologous adipose stem cell-based type 2 therapies, with no approved cares of type 1 regenerative medicine using allogeneic stem cells to date. In April, Kangstem Biotech signed a MOU with Tokyo-based Medical Care Group, specializing in immunotherapy for cancer treatment, to seek approval for the first allogeneic cord blood stem cell-based type 1 regenerative medicine in Japan.   Medical Care Group of Japan has shown optimism regarding the approval of the Type 1 regenerative medicine license, citing Kangstem Biotech's copmprehensive safety data from over 600 patients in clinical trials, as well as their GMP-compliant facilities and equipment.   Cord blood stem cells, isolated from umbilical cord blood, are the youngest and healthiest cells with superior growth and differentiation capabilities compared to fat- and bone marrow-derived stem cells. Clinical trials have demonstrated their superior therapeutic effects.   Acquiring a Class 1 regenerative medicine license will allow Furestem-AD® Inj. to be used as a treatment for atopic dermatitis even before final approval. Given that Japan has an estimated three times mor atopic patients that Korea, this presents a highly promising market opportunity. Lighthouse Legal Search Bay Area & California Quarterly Report - July 2024 Based on our data, in this latest quarter, of all lateral partner moves to major law firms in the Bay Area, 25% were in Litigation, 20% in Corporate, 15% in Intellectual Property, 10% in Labor & Employment, and 5% in Health Care. The top firms adding the most partners this quarter were Gordon & Rees LLP, Sideman & Bancroft, LLP, and WilmerHale. Litigation remains the largest growth practice area, reflecting ongoing high demand, while Corporate and Intellectual Property practices continue to expand due to increased activity in mergers and acquisitions, venture capital, and technology transactions. By Contrast: California as a Whole In California as a whole, the breakdown of lateral partner moves is as follows: 23% in Litigation, 12% in Labor & Employment, 9% in Corporate, 8% in Intellectual Property, and 3% in Banking. This broader state-wide trend shows a higher concentration in Litigation and Labor & Employment compared to the Bay Area, while Corporate and Intellectual Property moves are slightly less prominent. This indicates a robust demand for litigation expertise across the state and a significant focus on employment-related legal services. California Labor Code §3208.3 Claims: How is “Sudden and Extraordinary” Defined? - https://lnkd.in/ghTygSvq In California, employers are required to carry no-fault workers’ compensation insurance coverage for their employees. If a person is hurt on the job, they can file for benefits. However, California Labor Code § 3208.3(d) states that employers cannot be held liable through a workers’ compensation claim for a “psychiatric injury” of an employee who has not been on the job for at least six months. With that being said, situations where a psychiatric injury was caused by a “sudden and extraordinary” event are an exception. Here, our Sacramento workers’ compensation defense law firm explains how “sudden and extraordinary” is defined under California law. Know the Basics: Psychiatric are Compensable After Six Months of Employment In California, workers' compensation laws provide that psychiatric injuries are compensable, but with a notable caveat: the employee must have been employed for at least six months. If a worker develops a psychiatric injury after one day on the job, that injury is presumptive (but not automatically) non-compensable. The six-month requirement is based on the principle that sufficient employment duration allows for a fair assessment of work-related psychiatric stressors. Note: California’s workers’ compensation laws require six months of total employment. The six-month period need not be continuous. An Exception to the Six-Month Requirement for Sudden and Extraordinary Incident There is a critical exception to the six-month rule for psychiatric workers’ compensation claims in California: Trauma caused by a “sudden and extraordinary” event is compensable regardless of an employee’s tenure. In other words, a worker may apply to get workers’ compensation benefits for a psychiatric injury right away as long as they can assert that they endured some form of sudden and extraordinary event in the workplace. How California Defines “Sudden and Extraordinary” in Workers’ Compensation Cases The definition of “sudden and extraordinary” events in California workers' compensation cases can be central to these cases. However, the legal definition is somewhat vague, and courts will always closely examine the specific facts of the case. From a legal perspective, these terms have been interpreted to mean that a psychiatric injury within the first six months must be: Unforeseeable (sudden); and Unusual and inherently traumatic (extraordinary). The California Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB) generally looks for incidents that deviate significantly from the routine work activities an employee might be expected to perform. Yesterday, the California Senate passed SB 1501, which would allow entities to qualify to make the passthrough entity tax election even if they do not satisfy the June 15 prepayment requirement. Next, it will be sent to the Assembly and, if passed by the Assembly, it still must be signed by the Governor. If enacted, SB 1501 would, effective for taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2024, authorize a qualified passthrough entity (partnership, S corporation, or LLC taxed as a partnership or S corporation) to make a passthrough entity tax election without making the requisite June 15 prepayment. To qualify, the taxpayer would have to pay a penalty equal to 5% of the elective tax due plus interest by the due date of the original return without regard to any extensions.
