Over the past few months, there has been widespread speculation and caution from prominent figures in the AI community regarding the next update to ChatGPT or GPT-5. Many believe these updates could bring us closer to AGI, with some even claiming the model might exhibit PhD-level capabilities.

The wait is over. Earlier today, OpenAI made an announcement with the release of a new model series called OpenAI o1. While I haven’t had the chance to test this model myself, early evaluations and benchmarks indicate significant differences from GPT-4o, showing notable improvements.

Could this be the AGI many have anticipated? In my view, we’re not quite there yet. Still, several researchers, including both current and former OpenAI employees, suggest that this could be a crucial step towards achieving AGI.

Here are the few things about OpenAI o1 that you should know.
