Turo Car-Sharing Service Sued for Collecting Consumer Face Scans

Turo Inc. collected the face scans of consumers using its peer-to-peer car-sharing service without their consent in violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, a proposed federal class action said.

Viola Patterson alleged that Turo collected face scans from her when she rented and picked up a car through the service, but failed to inform her it was doing so or obtain her written consent as required under the act.

The company also disclosed her biometric information to service providers and contractors, and failed to post a policy establishing a retention schedule for biometric information, according to a complaint ...
