I remember watching an interview from the early 2000's where Eduard talked about this song being about a cowboy happy to be home. He was all set to perform the song when, government officials told him he was not allowed to sing the song because it sent messages of pro-western ideas. He decided to change all the words into melody rather than not perform at all.
I unironically love this song. The sultry voice of this man, the jollity, the wondrous orchestral accompaniment that sometimes takes a spotlight of its own. Down to every element and feature, this rendition of this song is amazing.
The best times I remember on the internet. When it was a wild west of fun and memes. Drama free. Everyone laughed together. Fighting was limited to console and video game wars.
Eduard Khil dies in 2012, then Putin annexes Crimea in 2014 followed by a full scale invasion in 2022. Am I alone in thinking the unbridled joy of this man was the single thread holding post-soviet Russia together?
