New research reveals that over four million Australians are currently living in ‘hygiene poverty, with more than one in seven (15%) respondents to a recent survey skimping on essential personal hygiene items for financial reasons. Worse still, for over 3.6 million of these people, it's the first time they’ve had issues affording personal hygiene products.🧼🪥 😲 As the costs of housing and food increase, items like toothpaste, shampoo, soap and hygiene health items have, for some, become unattainable “luxuries”. In our latest venture to support the community, we are putting together a pantry with a difference. Our pantry will be focused on providing personal hygiene products. CAN YOU HELP? Do you have new unopened products at home that you can donate? Perhaps next time you are at the shop can you pick up an item or two for our pantry? All donations will be gratefully received at our Community Centre office. Hopefully we will have our pantry (in Barramul St) up and running soon.✨ #HygienePantry #communitysupportingcommunity #bringingthecommunitytogether

A recent survey of 1,600 Australian tech workers has identified an emerging pay gap between those who work in the public sector and their new tech counterparts. Median base salaries for public sector employees are up to 50% lower than those in the private sector, with significant differences in bonuses and incentives, according to Professionals Australia, the union representing IT and video game workers. The union considers new tech firms to be large private software companies like Atlassian and Canva. Professionals Australia found private sector tech workers saw higher annual salary growth at 5.8% last year, compared with 2% for those in the public sector, despite a 7% increase in the cost of living over the same period. “People working in this sector are engaged and passionate about their work as a rule, but they are also concerned for their futures and their industry,” said Paul Inglis, Professionals Australia interim chief executive. “The majority have seen brutal layoffs and many worry that more are coming.” Are you noticing a slowdown or widening disparity in tech salaries? Comment below. 🖊️ Marty McCarthy For more coverage of the tech and startup sectors, subscribe to Tech Wrap-Up Australia, a newsletter from LinkedIn News Australia: https://lnkd.in/etCEife5

PM urged to clean out the government’s student loan system The head of a review into Australia’s universities has urged the government to implement all of its 47 recommendations as quickly as possible, including relief for millions of Australians with HECS-HELP (Higher Education Contribution Scheme-Higher Education Loan Program) debt, writes Jason Om for ABC News. The chair of the Universities Accord Panel, Mary O’Kane, has told 7.30 that the HECS-HELP system has become “rusty and crusty” over the years. “It’s full of strange little phenomena that have crept in like little gremlins and it needs a good clean out basically,” O’Kane said. That will likely come as no surprise to the 2.9 million people with HECS-HELP debt who will be hit by an increase of 4.7% when their debts are indexed on 1 June. The universities review panel has recommended changes to the way indexation is calculated. Ahead of the May budget, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has hinted there may be changes to student loans but has yet to detail the specifics. If the Australian economy is to thrive it must adopt AI, and soon; according to a new Kingston AI Group report published today. The report — Australia's AI Imperative by economist John Mangan — says greater utilisation of AI in key industries will lead to a short-term boost in GDP of more than $200 billion per year and the creation of an additional 150,000 jobs from 2023-2030. But failure to introduce AI to global standards could result in a $35.7 billion hit to GDP between now and 2027. Read the full story and download the report: https://bit.ly/447tsd5

Part-time employment is on the rise, with new data showing it has increased by 63.4% in Australia since 2006. Analysis of 15 years of census data by software company Reckon found 30.8% of Australian employees were in part-time roles. "Men have driven the largest increase (32.1%) in part-time employment, despite twice as many women working part-time. Now, one-fifth (21.4%) of men in the workforce pursue part-time work," Reckon Head of People and Culture Jessica Morris wrote on LinkedIn. The research found Byron Bay was Australia's part-time work hotspot, with nearly half of employees choosing that kind of arrangement. Writing on LinkedIn, workplace expert Professor Gary Martin said while workers and employers were more open to part-time work, there were challenges around role expectations and career growth. "Among the biggest complaints from part-time workers is that they are expected to handle a similar or even the same workload as full-time employees, despite working fewer hours," he said. "Part-time work can also impact career progression, as some employers might view part-time employees as less committed or capable of handling higher-level responsibilities." Would you consider part-time work? How can workplaces improve access to part-time employment for their staff while ensuring continual career progression? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
