Welcome PlayStation 5 Pro, the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation

Features including GPU upgrade, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution take players to new heights.

Over the last four years since the launch of PS5, we’ve worked hard to continuously evolve the console experience and deliver the great games our players expect from us. Today, I’m incredibly proud to announce the next step in that evolution and welcome PlayStation 5 Pro to the PlayStation family – our most advanced and innovative console hardware to date.

Welcome PlayStation 5 Pro, the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation

We developed PS5 Pro with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind – as many have asked for a console that runs even higher fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS. We achieved this on PS5 Pro with several key performance features.*

  • Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

PS5 Pro provides gamers with amazing graphics at high frame rates. You can hear Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro, discuss the key innovations from PS5 Pro in the following video presentation. This presentation provides a deep dive into the key performance features that make PS5 Pro truly special.

Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported.

It’s humbling to see how game creators have embraced the latest technology from PS5 Pro, and several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features. These games can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label within their title. Some games you can look forward to include blockbuster hits from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, such as Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.

We kept the look of the PS5 Pro consistent with the overall PS5 family of products. You’ll notice the height is the same size as the original PS5, and the width is the same size as the current PS5 model to accommodate higher performance specs. Players can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, or swap out console covers when they become available.

PS5 Pro fits perfectly within the PS5 family of products and is compatible with the PS5 accessories currently available, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore. The user interface and network services will also remain the same as PS5.

The PS5 Pro console will be available this holiday at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY (includes tax). It will include a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and a copy of Astro’s Playroom pre-installed in every PS5 Pro purchase. PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the currently available Disc Drive for PS5 separately.

PS5 Pro will launch on November 7, 2024 and will be available at participating retailers and directly from PlayStation at direct.playstation.com. Preorders will begin on September 26, 2024.

Our PS5 journey would not be possible without the millions of players that have supported us through the years and have shared with us their love of gaming. Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.

*Features only available on select PS5 games that have been enhanced for PS5 Pro when compared with the PS5. PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.

  • PC quality on a console Amazing!

  • That price tag for a console with next to zero first party output is well-and-truly in line with your baffling decisions this generation. At that price, buy a PC. All titles are going there anyway, and are way better quality and way lower prices with no PS+ requirements.

    • I hate PC gaming. Started Borderland 3 yesterday. It crippled my graphics card and had to reinstall windows. So no, I’m never getting a Pc for gaming. I am however selling my PS5 and getting and Xbox. Xbox has issues. But they aren’t as stupid as Playstation this gen.

    • PC has always been better for me because there i dont have to subscribe to an service to be able to play online multiplayer games.

    • Gotta love it when people say at that price (cost of PS5 Pro in this case), just buy a PC. Here’s the thing. If you’re in, say, Canada, the price of just a GPU alone is > $2000 for a high end one. Without the rest of the components. PS5 Pro is still way cheaper and I’ll be upgrading from my launch day PS5 disc version to the PS5 Pro, day one. Already bought the disc drive for it.

  • R.I.P

    TRAITORS
You are pushing gamers to PC.

  • No disc drive included for that price… ouch…

  • £699 for a 45% improvement without upscaling, and no disk drive? Sony have went right back to their PS3 launch meltdown.

    • PSSR is the upscaling it’s like DLSS for nivida. That’s where their claims of 8k are coming from. This won’t play game in 4k 60 with our PSSR.

  • No disc drive included and no bundle with a disc drive? WTF!?
I have to imagine that most people considering upgrading have an OG PS5 and therefore will also have to buy a disc drive on top of the already high €800?

Playstation is really making it obvious that they want to kill disc based media.

  • Wow that’s expensive for what you get. It says it includes a 2TB SSD, as in internal storage or an M.2 pre-installed?
Because I personally don’t want to pay for an M.2 that I won’t use or need.

The only way this is an upgrade for me is if it will actually do 4K 120hz with 4:4:4 color space. (PS5 currently does 4:2:2 when 120hz is enabled)

  • 799.99 euro without disk… :( in 2020 PS5 it was 499.99 euro with disk.
As much as I would like the console, I consider it a very high price.

  • I thought you were joking when you revealed that price, and it doesn’t even come with a disc drive?? What????
AND WHY IS IT 800 EURO

  • It was a great showing I’m just bummed out about not including a disk drive but great reveal quick simple no fluff a premium machine and it has AI technology in it 700 well spent!

  • It has some notable improvements but the price tag and so on will be very concerning.

There’s also too many versions of this console to buy and making others obsolete too soon.

I’ll continue being patient until I somehow manage to get a PS5 far into the future.

  • No disc drive included at that price? You have officially lost the plot Sony. Borderline tone deaf.

  • $700 Sony … 700 dollars I mean I’m not even mad at the original PS3 pricing the PS5 Pro is getting. The thing is Sony … The PS3 had full EXCLUSIVES not on PC, YOUR DIRECT COMPETITOR.

Get rid of all PC Ports, all PC support ,get rid of Nixxes and Bungie. And boom: $700 PS5 Pro is justified.

And all the PC Support people look foolish right now. True Sony fans were right about this in the end.

  • Why on earth is the GBP price the same as USD?

  • 800 euro’s without disc… and no games at all that uses that power (not even on the normal ps5). So far the ps5 generation is very disappointing. Remasters and remakes. Your wallet has no limits!

  • Sony this price is way too high for us gamers! I mean 800 EUR for a Pro is already like 200 too high, and it is without a disc driven even , so things are more expensive too!

  • So just to clarify, the 699$ ps5 pro doesn’t include the disc reader? I have to buy it separately? Damn.
I guess at least it comes with 2tb.

  • 2 TB SSD??? I’m sold 😍

    • Buy a 200$ ssd for your ordinary PS5 instead. Money saved.

    • You’re sold on a 1TB upgrade that you can do by yourself for cheap? Okay. I am not sold when it basically is up to developers to optimize their games to run okay on our consoles. Now Sony is charging crazy money for us to play 4K 60fps. 750 USD with tax is not cheap for a digital only console.

  • Far to expensive Sony…if you have to buy the disc drive you are looking at close to £800,and after the concord failure you pull this one…

  • This is laughable. Equivalent of £900 because of standardised pricing, with no stand and no disc-drive. What exactly is the selling point for people with Disc-PS5s? Utter joke.

  • No offence Sony but 800 Euro (880 dollars) without a disc drive is insane. In Europe i will need 800 euro plus 120 euro for the disk drive and another 30 euro for the stand. In total that’s more than 1050 dollars … which is insane. But is it fair towards me the Playstation enthusiast since forever to ship a console without disc drive? What would i do with all my disk games library?? Not fair Sony not fair.
I really hope that you will have soon a disk bundle at a reasonable price otherwise even people so dedicated like me will leave and buy a PC…. really disappointed.

  • Well there it is…

    The Professional PlayStation experience.

There is definitely something about it, but boy oh boy… not sure how to tell it the price is something. The older games showcased to demonstrate the tech capabilities are just a dozen or so games.
The price hike is quite substantial and the accessories sold separately increased in price bts(DualSense) on major retailers is not the best sign.
W/o much new content there is nothing special about it.

  • $700 and doesn’t even have real exclusive games, everything getting ported to PC… absolutely no value attatched to the console when it comes to the library.

  • I really thought the bad decisions where done after Jim Ryan got fired. What the hell is happening with that price point? I was really hyped for the pro. That’s all gone now. So much so that I’m legit thinking about jumping ship on Playstation and going to Xbox. I will probably sell my PS5 now. Xbox has its issues. But at least there aren’t ripping their costumers off. With that I probably have to pay closer to 1000$ where I live. And that is without a disc drive, which is a must for me.

    Goodbye Sony.

P.S. Who ever sat the price point needs to get fired ASAP!!

  • This is just….I can’t support this. I have bought every PlayStation product; PS1, PS2 I didn’t purchase a launch PS3 because it was just too expensive, PS4, PS4pro, PSVR psp, psvita, PSvR2, move controller, the gun, the eye, launch PS5 but PS5Pro for 700$ with no disc and a 2tb ssd for just some possible better visual and frame rates on existing games and new ones, when Sony hasn’t even really supported PS5 this gen and it’s been 4yrs is just unacceptable. This is a PS3 moment all over again. I won’t be moving to PS5pro til a price cut happens if I ever do cause I don’t see a real reason for this thing to exist tbh.

    • same exact thing with me, got all the PlayStations at launch but PS3 because of the ridiculous pricing on it. I ended up getting a used PS3 Super Slim for really cheap 2-3 years ago, but you can count me out of the PS5Pro just like you could count me out of the PS3. Sony has lost their minds, I think I’m sticking with Nintendo from here on out.

Dissapointed to say the least …. such a bad move from your side execs.
I really hope that you will have soon a disk bundle at a reasonable price otherwise even people so dedicated like me will leave and buy a PC…. really disappointed.

  • How much in $AUD, $1100 +$159 for the disc drive?

  • No vertical stand and no disk drive for this price? Better buy a PC.

  • I wasn’t expecting you to mention PSVR2, well you delivered, but I still feel disappointed.

  • 800 Euros? Why 800 Euros???

  • Despite the hardware advancements, the marketing and pricing for this ‘Pro’ console is horrible. Insane pricing, no disc drive, no stand, no new games announced, and still having to hope the games you’ve bought will be updated. That’s if the update is free because greedy studios/publishers will make you pay to have the ability to fully utilize the console. Never seen a more compelling reason for people to get a PC. Sony, get back into the handheld market and actually listen to your audience.

  • no backward compatibility for ps3, ps2 and ps1. it’s too expensive, I won’t buy it.

I have a problem with Polish support regarding f1-23 with ps plus in the digital version. they ignore my case. how do you want to convince me to buy the digital version when I can’t play it and I have ps plus. maybe in the US or Japan they will help me?

  • Wow this is horrible. Calling something pro then you go and take away parts of it so you can just charge more later is insane. Nothing that cost $700 would come without a disc drive, plus this thing shouldn’t cost that much anyways. Drop the price of the PS5 to 399 and put the Pro at 499. That make this worth it. Right now I can see the Pro DAO. Somehow Sony didn’t learn from the PSVR2 pricing.

  • If there’s no trade in promotion it’s a hard pass for me.

  • We’re really living another E3 2006 moment.

PS3 80GB launch price was 599€, adjusted for inflation is 824€ in 2024 money.
PS5 Pro launches for 799€, if we include the disc drive (119€ MSRP) the total is 919.98€ (1,012$)

The only consolation is that the standard PS5 is still plenty of power for almost half the price.

  • No mention of enhancements for PSVR2? Come on Sony that’s one of the MAIN REASONS for this console to exist, to give PSVR2 the power it actually needs to get GT7 etc out of reprojection.

I knew it wouldn’t be PSVR2 heavy in this 9 minute vid but at least ONE mention of it ‘enhancing VR’ would have been… encouraging? :/

Also £700 WITHOUT a disc drive? WTF. Tech is meant to get cheaper as the years pass, the upgrades in this should cost around the same as the OG did on release 4 years back, now no drive and £300 more! I get times are hard all over but it’s not exactly like you have a ton of must-play exclusives right now either.

FTR I’ve owned the PS1 (bought it at launch back in the 90s), PS3, PS3 Slim, PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, PSVR1, PSVR2… but PS5 PRO is looking pretty hard to justify at this price without the drive and NO massive VR enhancements mentioned.

I’ll wait and see if/how it enhances PSVR2 games like REvil, GT7, NMS etc as that’s pretty much all I play now anyway. Does it have 2TB SSD? That helps a bit I guess, it definitely needed it. Just wish it had the drive, it’s obvious you’re pushing everyone towards digital which is even more costly as you can rarely buy digital cheap for years vs sales on amazon or used games.. nor sell them on.

Even £700 WITH a disc drive would have been pushing it but acceptable, but untili GTA6 drops you just don’t have the games to even warrant it, as said my only interest until GTA 6 was for playing GT7 in VR with graphical enhancements at 90fps instead of 60fps… but no mention of if that’s even gonna be a thing? Time you stopped holding everything so close to your chest as a company and be more open about the future of PS with VR, AAA games and more. Also factor in the ridiculous PAY TO PLAY ONLINE which I’ll never do (I have a fast PC too) and you’re really taking the fun and the whole point out of console gaming (oh and the £70 games lol). Literally the only thing you’ve done right this gen, for me, is the DS controllers and PSVR2 – I commend you for still going with VR as it IS awesome and the best HMD I’ve owned out of 8 in 10 years, but NEEDS MORE AAA/FIRST PARTY GAMES!

Lastly, I hope the pro isn’t SOLEY focussing on ‘same old gfx but at 60fps’ I for one prefer fidelity mode over performance (obv not in VR) so paying tons of cash just to play games at the speed the OG should have been able to play isn’t great, but if they actually LOOK BETTER on their 30fps modes (Higher res more FX more RT) then cool. Even on PRO I’d still select fidelity mode unless it was frame rate vital (and I don’t play online on PS5 so… no)

You better have some amazing AAA games up your sleeves now to take advantage of the PRO or it’s just slide into history as the worst gen ever.

  • I’m really disappointed by the lack of support for 21:9 ultrawide monitor. I have a Gaming PC and there’s no chance i’m going back playing in 16:9 at 60fps.

  • Will the existing Slim disc drive add on work on the PS5 Pro? Or will there be a specific pro disc drive addon?

  • I have owned every iteration of Sony’s consoles. And aside from PS1, I’ve been a Day 1 adopter. For the first time in nearly 30 years, you lost me Playstation. $700 with no disc drive and no stand is ridiculous, backwards, and feels against so much of what you’ve built over the last several generations. I was looking forward to the PS5 Pro. Out of principle, I’m not getting this. Really heartbroken.

  • Ok, but the real question on everyone’s minds – does it support 3D Blu-ray playback?

  • The PS5’s main shortcoming is that it is CPU-limited. And this VERY expensive “Pro” model does nothing to address that. So you can upgrade the GPU, double-down on buzzwords like “ray tracing” and “AI.” But if games were CPU-limited on the base model, they will still be CPU-limited on the Pro model. And as such, frame rates are unlikely to improve to any appreciable degree.

  • I enjoyed the PS5 Pro presentation. It has a lot of new features, (PSSR, ETC.) and raytrace has improved. Plus, the technology on the Pro have improved drastically. However, the price tag of $700 is something I am not a fan of, because I feel it is too high, and plus, I feel that Sony is making the same mistakes like they did with the PS3 at launch. Overall, I love the presentation, and I look forward to getting the Pro version of the PS5 like I did with the PS4 Pro, even when I am not a fan of the PS5 Pro price.

  • Ridiculous, I gave you the benefit of doubt even at £499 I would have had to have a serious think about it but £699 with no disk drive…ohh unless you want to spend ANOTHER £100 on a drive so that any physical games will work.

Even the PS4 Pro was only £349 at release and that came with a drive.

It’s a hard NO from me, it seems now that the competition has all but dried up the price goes through the roof.

    • Yeah! It’s like, they are repeating the SAME mistakes like they did with PS3 at launch. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed the presentation, but the price is something I am disappointed at, and plus, I am very critical of the PS5 Pro price.

  • Horrible price for a mid-step “upgrade”. What a joke.

    • Barely an upgrade. I know they can’t make blanket promises, but even just saying it’ll “narrow the gap” between fidelity and performance mode is not confident enough for how much this costs. And that’s the only thing it has going for it.
