Six Degrees of Robotics
Taiwan must not lag in developing robot dogs to address labor shortages in its industrial sector, emphasized Professor Kuo Chung-hsien of National Taiwan University. Kuo, who heads the university's Autonomous & Soft Robotics Laboratory, showcased prototypes of two robot dogs: one designed as a pet and the other for industrial use. Kuo highlighted that robot dogs are already used internationally for various applications, such as inspecting electrical grid converter stations in the US, subway systems in Paris, and traffic monitoring in Spain. However, Taiwan has seen limited efforts in this area due to the high costs and maintenance of robot dogs, as well as the lack of necessary customization technology. Despite these challenges, Kuo stressed the importance of Taiwan developing its own robot dogs to meet the country's specific needs. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eraZYNxp

TSMC plans to raise prices for its 3nm and 5nm process manufacturing by 3% to 8% next year. This decision is driven by the need to cover rising costs and maintain its impressive 53% gross profit margin. Additionally, prices for TSMC's CoWoS (Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate) advanced packaging technology will also increase. This price hike comes at a time when TSMC's 3nm and 5nm production lines are operating at full capacity. Despite the price increases, chip design firms like Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm reportedly have no alternatives for advanced production because of TSMC's dominant position in the market. However, these firms have expressed concerns, noting that the economic recovery has not been strong enough to easily absorb these higher costs. Donghua University’s research on photoelectric fields has obvious carbon reduction benefits Donghua University has established a flux tower in a 66-hectare solar photovoltaic field in Zhaofeng Section, Hualien County, to assess the environmental impacts of electric fields. Research findings indicate that while the conversion of forest land to solar fields reduces carbon absorption due to tree removal, the power generated can offset 550 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per hectare annually. The study compares emissions at the solar field, which released 7 metric tons of CO2, with Da Nong Da Fu Pingdi Forest Park that absorbed 25 metric tons. The solar installation generates an average of 1.13 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per hectare per year, contributing to fossil fuel replacement. Water retention is also improved in the photovoltaic field, with annual evaporation measurements indicating that it retains more rainwater compared to forests. Continuous monitoring systems are in place to study ecological interactions, revealing the presence of various wild animals, including several bird species. Further research is planned to analyze the energy budget in relation to atmospheric conditions through ongoing collaborations with institutions like the University of Michigan. #MotiveAsia #Taiwan https://lnkd.in/gDtkjhYr

Converting CO 2 into fuels and chemicals using electricity, also known as CO 2 electrochemical conversion, is a promising method to reduce emissions. This process allows us to use the carbon captured from industries and the atmosphere and turn it into a resource that we would normally get from fossil fuels. https://lnkd.in/gYmz4xDa

Arima Onsen holds key to understanding the Noto earthquake: Focus on deep fluids and water carried by plates Summary: Arima Onsen in Kobe City is a unique hot spring that releases hot water over 90 degrees even though there are no nearby volcanoes. Research has shown that the heat source is deep fluid that rises from deep underground, related to volcanic activity and earthquake swarms on the Noto Peninsula. The hot springs at Arima have passed through the mantle, containing rare isotopes and elements found in high-temperature places deep underground. Understanding the processes at Arima Onsen also sheds light on the formation of volcanoes and earthquakes in other regions of Japan. #AsiaRisk #NaturalDisasters #Japan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/girvHQsr

Solid-state lithium batteries made in Wuhan are about to be unveiled The pilot production line of solid-state lithium/sodium ion battery key technology and industrialization project at Wuhan Future Institute received China's National Compulsory Product Certification (3C Certification), indicating that the project products have passed quality and safety assessments for mass production. Led by Professor Guo Xin from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the research project took 26 years to develop. The innovative solid-state battery replaces traditional organic electrolytes with solid electrolytes, enhancing safety, performance, and temperature range of the battery. With a full-process production line, the project has exceeded expectations by reaching battery production in half the time. Solid-state batteries developed by the project offer high safety, wide operating temperature range (-40C to 120C), high energy density, and fast charging capabilities. The solid-state batteries underwent rigorous testing, including steel needle punctures, boiling water, freezing with dry ice, and cutting with scissors - and still maintained good performance. Furthermore, solid-state lithium batteries will soon be produced by Solid State Ion Energy Technology (Wuhan) Co., Ltd, expanding into consumer electronic products and new energy vehicles. Next, the project team will evaluate cost differences, product yield, and consistency to overcome final industrialization bottlenecks and gear up for full-scale production. Since its establishment in 2022, Wuhan Future Institute has focused on piloting cutting-edge projects based on industry needs with impressive progress. #MotiveAsia #China https://lnkd.in/gRCyA2tD

Loss per share in the second quarter was 0.58 yuan! Power Semiconductor: No dividends will be paid in the first half of the year Power Semiconductor reported a net profit loss of 2.397 billion yuan for the first half of the year, equating to a loss per share of 0.58 yuan. The company's revenue decreased by 2.29%, totaling 21.943 billion yuan. No dividends will be distributed for the first half of 2020, continuing a trend from the previous year. The company plans to increase capital by converting employee stock option certificates into ordinary shares at subscription prices of 10 yuan and 13.8 yuan, totaling 8,830,250 shares. The decline in gross profit was attributed to low capacity utilization in the trial production phase at the Tongluo plant, which is expected to continue affecting margins, although stable order visibility in the third quarter may lead to slight revenue increases. #Semiconductors #Taiwan https://lnkd.in/e7A3WGPa

IMPORTANT UPDATES on Results of Taiwan Round 3.2 Ranking no 1: Shinfox 2:Synera Renewable Energy 3:Orsted 4:CIP 5:Corio 6.Infravest Although the EA hasn’t officially released the results, multiple outlets confirm them. Recent leaks were accurate, with two local champions taking the top spots. Shinfox, a major player and EPC with their own vessels, is new to offshore wind. Their vessels are now in Taiwan for the TPCII project, so we’ll soon see their capabilities. Synera Renewable Energy, formerly Swancor, was the original Taiwanese "local champion" developer, now owned by a US fund. There’s a twist: Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) and Orsted have overlapping projects, putting Orsted at risk. All bidders opted for zero bids, with rankings based on localization points. If capacity issues arise due to overlaps, there might be a “Round 3.2 part 2,” though this is speculative. Infravest, a Taiwanese company with a German boss, is back after selling their offshore department to wpd (now Skyborn). They’ll likely need a partner to succeed. This round highlights the rise of local developers, especially Shinfox, which has strong government ties and financial resources.
