Why is brd.c built into the kernel

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When the brd driver is built in to the kernel there is no way to change the number or size of the ramdisks without rebooting the system which is inconvenient.
  • If it were built as a module then the rd_nr and rd_size module options could be used to adjust the ramdisks as needed.
  • Redhat usually builds everything they can as modules so why the exception for the brd driver?
  • Fedora builds it as a module and there does not seem to be anything in the boot process which depends on it.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
