Want to know where the newstands on China? Look at the actual decisions. Spoiler: not encouraging. 1⃣Huge solar farms green-lighted despite credible allegations of Uyghur slavery in the supply chain of contractors. 2⃣Reports that the Free Speech Bill was dropped partly under pressure from Universities fearing disruption to Chinese market. 3⃣Delay on putting China (or anyone else) in the Enhanced Tier of the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme, despite prep work having been more-or-less completed. 4⃣Front bench instructed not to call China a "threat". 5⃣Commitment to push for genocide recognition of anti-Uyghur atrocities dropped. 6⃣Prime Minister talking about ***security cooperation*** in call with Xi Jinping 😱7⃣Business community reportedly bullish, confident of business as usual - have they been reassured? 8⃣Chinese mega-embassy plans back on the agenda. 9⃣London stock exchange accused of lowering standards to appeal to Chinese and Hong Kong IPOs. Positive stuff: 🔟Anti-dumping reviews announced. 1⃣1⃣WTO China review and Universal Periodic Review statement were pretty good. 1⃣2⃣Cyber Security and Resilience Bill might be OK? I'm clutching at straws a bit. Brief comment: Overall the evidence points towards the's programme elevating short-term economic gain above resilience, human rights, even our relationship with the EU (who are not over the moon about early signs re: UK/China posture), as I (and others) predicted, sadly. These sorts of decisions will hamper the UK's long-term economic interests, putting us at the mercy of Beijing's economic coercion, worsening dependencies, and crippling our ability to withstand an economic shock in the event of escalation in the Taiwan Strait. According to dozens of well-placed sources, the shadow of Lord Mandelson looms large over this wrong-headed approach, predicated on the never-accurate notion that the UK is too weak to do anything about it, and should bump along with Beijing as they slowly move towards a rules-respecting position. I wonder what will have to happen before the antediluvians get the memo. Maybe, you know, read anything the CCP says or does? Hoping that this is a false start and that the wheels of leadership will creak into gear. FIN.
