Anti-immigrant campaigner Tommy Robinson is an Irish citizen whose real name is Stephen Lennon, leaked Canadian arrest documents have revealed.

Robinson was arrested in Canada this week for alleged immigration offences and ordered to hand over his passport.

Footage posted online showed him being nicked by cops and put in the back of a squad car.

Leaked documents posted on social media show how Robinson – who previously wore a badge supporting an ex-British soldier facing prosecution for two murders on Bloody Sunday – is an Irish citizen.

The right-wing figure was held on Monday before being released.

Footage posted online showed him being handcuffed and led to the back of a waiting car.

A man who appeared to be a plain clothes police officer told him he was being arrested under an outstanding immigration warrant.

Robinson said on X, formerly Twitter: “None of this makes sense, I’m now detained in Calgary, prevented from leaving the city, these conditions stop me from continuing my tour of Canada and meeting with guests for podcasts.

“I’m not even allowed to leave to travel home.”

The 41-year-old had been booked to speak in three Canadian cities by an outlet called Rebel News.

Robinson has been active in far-right politics for many years. He was a member of the British National Party (BNP) from 2004 to 2005.

For a short time in 2012, he was joint vice-chairman of the British Freedom Party (BFP).

He co-founded the English Defence League (EDL) in 2009 and led it until 8 October 2013.

In 2015, he became involved with the development of Pegida UK, a now-defunct British chapter of the German far-right Pegida.

Robinson has regularly posted about immigration levels in Ireland and came here in 2023 to shoot a documentary.

Following his arrival Dublin, Robinson said he was in Ireland to “ask questions and put together a piece, to show what’s happening”.

He denied he was invited here and said that he travelled to Dublin as a journalist to “go where the news is”.

At the time, he said he was not here to ‘take over’ the anti-immigration movement.

Robinson’s visit to Ireland underlined the involvement of serious criminal figures in the rise of the far-right in here.

On the night of his arrival he posed for pictures, arm in arm, with notorious Ballyfermot heroin dealer Anthony ‘Harpo’ O’Driscoll.

Robinson, who has been banned from most major social media platforms at one time or another, was previously kicked off Facebook for “dehumanising language and calls for violence targeted at Muslims”.

In 2021, he lost a libel case taken against him by a Syrian schoolboy who was filmed being attacked at school.
