It appears most people are short-term thinkers. When they see an elderly person struggling to walk, or someone trying out an "age suit" that simulates old age (for example this video: youtu.be/3PYuSjSbGrg ), they think it is funny, as if it didn't imply anything about themselves.

To me, it was never funny. It is just another bitter reminder that this is where I and everyone around me will end up. Hell already exists in reality, not only in fairy tales. It is called "old age". (Actually heaven exists too. It is called "sex with foreskin".)

I sometimes block online advertisements for just this reason, to avoid seeing ads that contain old people. Almost everything else (besides old people and loud noises) is OK. I normally allow ads to support YouTube creators and websites, but then ads with old people appeared who hadn't had sex since the fall of the Berlin wall, reminding me of everyone's fate if science doesn't eliminate aging soon enough, and even then, it might be too late for soon beloved people. The last ad was of an elderly co-existing (not loving) couple showing that they build solar cells for the next generation (youtu.be/nwAEJLQ2hWs, for anyone interested). Thank you to that stupid ad for reminding me of impending old age, you made my day.

Aging is a tragic tale. First you try to deny how your body isn't the same as it used to be (watch "Turning 30: A Horror Story", youtu.be/mKmn3fm4bn8 ). Then you have to watch how your parents get older and weaker and sicker and you know there is nothing you can do to stop it, and then the same happens to yourself. Whenever yet another part of the body fails due to age, such as the eye's ciliary muscle, there is no doctor that can cure it. The doctor will just tell you something like "it's presbyopia - it is normal to come with age". Yes, normal. Doesn't make it less worrying.

Old people need to be cared for just to be able to stay alive. They are not even able to enjoy life and do things that young people can do such as having sex. All they can do is sitting on their rocking chairs and counting the days. It is really sad.

Why should people born a longer time ago be less healthy? It doesn't make sense. The body should improve with time, not degrade! It is like an inescapable black hole or quicksand. There is a timer in the back of our heads that ticks along, that says "you have X years and X months left until age 70". I recommend watching "The Debunkathon" by Captain Disillusion ( youtu.be/OX-Ra4nrVj0 ), which deals with gerascophobia and shows the death clock in the head. I am looking forward to a world where there would no longer be this imaginary timer ticking in the back of everyones' heads.

I would also like people to stop saying "died of natural causes". Name it what it is. "Died of old age". "natural" sounds glorifying.

When science finds a solution for age, we also need to prevent it from being crushed by psychopathic bureaucrats who are never satisfied with their money. Watch Cream by David Firth and read about the Burzynski cancer cover-up to see what I mean. Not on Wikipedia or mainstream sources of course. Wikipedia and mainstream sources are severely manipulated on medical topics, just look at how they massively glorify circumcision and deny all the complications and harmful effects of it. (But those greedy bureaucrats need the age cure for themselves too! So there should be no conflict of interest. So if they crush it, they would metaphorically shoot themselves in the foot.)

As I see it, the fundamental, and insurmountable, problem with epigenetic testing to access age is that biological age is not the exact same thing as remaining life/healthspan. We do have access to a tool which can judge remaining life/healthspan. It may sound on a certain level superficial, but the human brain evolved over millions of years to make that assessment based upon visual cues at both conscious and unconscious levels. How old you look to people that do not know you is currently the most accurate biomarker of aging. I think a digital model should be built around this existing framework.

@jimofoz: I've given a few presentations in recent years on topics relating to the challenges of delivery in gene therapy. In essence the whole of the challenge is delivery. Here are slides from one of the earlier ones: https://www.fightaging.org/pdf/gene-therapies-08-2021.pdf

Hi Reason,

It seems that gene therapy is a key technology for a lot of rejuvenation biotechnology beyond small molecules.

I'd really appreciate a "state of gene therapy" in 2024 from you... if you have the time and energy to write it. I have tried searching for information myself, but seem to just come across a lot of very optimistic articles, and scientific papers that my knowledge of the field limits me from interpreting correctly.

I've noted that Repair Bio has gone from trying to conduct gene therapy in macrophages, to marcophage precursors, and now mRNA therapy in the liver over the years, probably due to gene therapy just not being ready for prime time for some reason. It would be interesting to get your perspectives on what the actually showstoppers are?

I actually have personal experience with such inconsistency between different clocks.

myDNAge showed me +7 years (I.e. older than calendar)
Saliva: -3 years
Phenoage: -10 years
Aging.ai (when it was available): -35 years

So, I am not sure if someone can rely on any of these clocks.

Similarly, blood cell epigenetic age was significantly greater than that in control individuals, as calculated using the PhenoAge, DunedinPACE, or Hannum epigenetic clocks, with no difference using the Horvath clock.

Anyone know why the Horvath clock didn't show a difference???
