“The next time you curse the Serbs, just remember that he celebrates this day as his victory. Then remember the concentration camps for children, remember we Serbs, remember the 700,000 Serbs in Jasenovac, remember Stara Gradiska, remember Jadovna, remember how they slaughtered us in the churches and smashed our heads with mallets, remember how they converted us to Catholicism, remember every mother who wept for Krajina.”
On August 4th, Serbs commemorate the beginning of Operation Storm, final stage of Croatia’s ethnic cleansing of the Krajina’s native Serbian population. Over 2,000 Serbs were butchered, thousands rαρεd and over 250,000 were violently expelled by the Croatians, particularly after Tudjman instructed his forces to “inflict such a blow to the Serbs, to make them practically disappear." I’ve been privileged to know a number of Serbian refugees from Krajina over the course of my lifetime.
On August 7th, 1995, Croatian pilots targeted and bombed a column of Serbian refugees fleeing the country on Petrovac Road during the ethnic cleansing campaign known as Operation Storm. Thirteen people died, including four small children, a pregnant young woman, and an elderly grandmother. Dozens more were wounded. During Operation Storm, over 2,000 Serbs were butchered, thousands rαρεd and over 250,000 were violently expelled by the Croatians, particularly after Tudjman instructed his forces to “inflict such a blow to the Serbs, to make them practically disappear."
