While Israel Battles Multiple Fronts, Its Gravest Threat Is Simmering From Within

Is Israel truly on the brink of a civil war, nearing a violent clash between gangs of messianic people and important and key portions of Israeli society?

Israel is now facing a multifront war. In the north, we have been in a violent confrontation with Hezbollah for 10 months. Eighty thousand of the region's residents have left their homes, dispersed across the country. In the south, there is no need to elaborate. The Iranian militias in Syria, the Houthis in Yemen, the Iranian militias in Iraq and above all, Iran, are all involved now in a war with Israel, prepared to expand it while increasing its scope.

The "Judeo-messianic sector" is only the symptom. The disease is the supremacist, extremist, and utterly illegal ideology of the Likud as expressed in its 1977 party platform, which claims Israeli sovereignty from the river to the sea, and even declares that a Palestinian state would be a threat to peace (https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/original-party-platform-of-the-likud-party). All those in Israel who, by action or inaction, have contributed to the success of the Likud are jointly responsible for today's destruction of Israel, as well as for the destruction of Judaism's reputation throughout the world. Shame on all of you.

Mr Olmert, you bring to mind Aristotle and Bertrand Russell's view that he struggled to escape the influence of his master Plato. In your case you see the injustice as well as the futility of Israel's policies, perhaps even the injustice and futility of its existence. Yet you cannot escape entirely the grip of Zionism, just as Aristotle could not escape Plato's problematic idealism. Aristotle in the end gave us much that was better than Plato, however, will you?

The sense that your Judeo-fascists "have permission to do as they like" is derived directly from the fact that Western powers allow your Apartheid State to do as it likes.

I experienced these messianic lunatics in N.Y.C, in 1970, as they physically attacked Jews at Columbia University, because those Jews wanted peace with the Palestinians. I watched them as they prepared to take over Israel, and it was not a secret. I saw the look of puzzlement in the eyes of secular Jews, who thought they were just a fringe, but I knew it was a tumor that would spread within Israel. They breed, and are filled with hatred and teach hatred to their young. When you nurture a lion cub, feed it raw meat, you will find that as it grows, he will demand more and more, and soon he will come after the one who feeds him.

A prescient analysis. The greatest danger to Israel is the inhumane policy of the messianic crowd. Thanks Haaretz for publishing this important opinion

No less a figure than Ben Gurion warned in 1967 that Israel should not keep the conquered territory (except Jerusalem and the Golan Heights), that occupation would change the very nature of the Jewish State.
His warning, his prophecy, has now come to pass. The settlers now threaten the very existence of Israel as Olmert says. This is a tragedy of epic proportions.

Important article, but perhaps it's unintended, the image presented here is one of "them" versus "us", the truth is far more complex. There is a seamlessness of varying degrees of acknowledged and unacknowledged collective racism, personal toxicity, institutional Jewish supremacy, municipal discriminatory practices etc...that stretch from the "liberal" secular elitist Askenazi Supreme Court 40 years ago to the most extreme Hilltop youth today...and that seamlessness has been nurted directly and indirectly by the state for decades. Don't be surprised if the version you find distasteful comes back to bite you...

I do agree that hate between us is the problem.
I do not agree that this comes from one site.
There is a lot of hate from the left and in this newsmagazine against the Hareidim
There are extremist in the Haredi world.
And there is a group in the zionist-religion people who are mostly against the Arabs but also against other groups as left and the Haredim.
All this hate we have to fight.
Do disagree with me but with respect.
Do not tell what you think other people's intention is if there is no prove.
I read this newsmagazine but there is this hate also a big part.
So please a respect your have a different opinion and do disagree and talk about it.

It is not leftist hate, rather despair

Jan, of course we should respect each other, but you may be missing an important point. No religious/fanatic fringe group has ever stopped from its own will in human history. The fact that their "home base group" (christians, moslems, jews, germans, etc) is mostly decent has never stopped fanatics. Only a strong state can. France was saved by the 1905 law which established state secularism . Spain did not have this chance, and went through a civil war. This revealing historical lesson seems, unfortunately, not enough understood in Israel.

yes the very and most inportant step for Israel is to separate the STATEand the RELIGION in the near future, like we did it in France

Take a good look at the people in the photos on this page. Do Israelis and their external supporters even realize how ugly these people are? Do they get it? Do they realize what far gone stage of moral, legal, spiritual and broad-based societal degeneracy these people signify?

Mr Olmert you are correct. One question. This was also the case when you were PM. Why didn't you do something about it then? Successive governments in Israel have all
"allowed anything, with no state authority being able to stop them". Them being as you explained "their leaders and representatives in the Knesset, government municipalities and other public authorities"
This rot was aided and abetted by you!
