Health Update 2: The Specialist
Met with the specialist today. They think they've narrowed it down to one of two things: an extremely rare, serious bacterial fungal infection... or, well, lung cancer.
Because of the severity of my condition, they're escalating me surgery on Thursday. I'll under go anesthesia (which has its own risks), and stick a camera/robot into my lungs to cut off pieces of the growths so they can determine what I'm dealing with once and for all.
This has escalated far, far more serious than I ever could have imagined a month ago.

Please take care of yourself and get better soon :<
Hey, I read your twitter post about being uninsured. UVA has financial assistance, and all tax-exempt charitable hospital systems are required to have a financial assistance policy per requirements of the Affordable Healthcare Act under IRS 501( r ).
The fact you don't have insurance right now sucks big time, but this can be worked through. I've done it, a large part of my time for the last 7 years has been occupied by dealing with the healthcare system (for both myself and caring for another person). I don't know if your income would be low enough to qualify for Medicaid (Virginia has taken the Medicaid expansion to extend coverage to all low-income adults), but many hopsital system financial assistance policies will want you to apply to it and have your denial letter as proof you sought help elsewhere first. They might also ask you to apply for health insurance before helping, but see the next paragraph (and skim their actual policy if you can).
Given the seriousness of your condition I imagine your specialist will gladly help speed this process along, I would call your specialist's office first thing tomorrow and tell them you cannot afford the prepay for your visit - they will try to transfer you to their financial assistance department / social worker, but given your condition I would very politely but insistently ask them to advise your doctor of the fact you have no health care coverage and will have difficulty affording your care. They can make things happen at high-quality University associated health systems, trust me. They don't like when their patients cancel visits for preventable reasons, and that's why I say call the specialist's office BEFORE the financial assistance department. They want to see you show up for your appointment as much as you do.
From there, it will be annoying but hopefully not too stressful. Listen to what the financial assistance department or social worker says, they will guide you through applying. It will be frustrating, expect to produce assets, proof of income and bank statements (some places are better than others).
You might be able to apply for insurance before the enrollment period in some circumstances, too, but mark the start of open enrollment on your calendar anyway (Nov 1st): https://www.healthcare.gov/coverage.....llment-period/
Best of luck. The healthcare at University-associated hospital systems, in my personal experience, is world-class and affordable, but navigating it to make it affordable is not something they teach in school.
I'm praying for you.
Sending good vibes your way. As much as it sucks to say.... I hope it's the infection.
