The United States was a bronze medalist in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and won gold in 2008 in Beijing. The Americans are looking for their sixth all-time Olympics medal, which would tie for the most all time, and now get an Italy team that will place top-4 for an eighth straight Olympics.
The United States won Pool B with a 3-0 record and took a 3-1 win over 2016 Olympic champion Brazil (26-24, 28-30, 25-19, 25-19) in the quarterfinal round. The Americans couldn’t finish off a 2-1 lead over Poland in the semifinals and lost a tight fifth set, 15-13, to come up a step shy of playing for gold.
