Bernard update! 9.5 weeks old, almost 500 grams, and mostly made of skin? I’m starting to wonder if Bernard is an alien. He’s not fat, but he does have ridiculous size at 9.5 weeks old and a LOT of skin, a lot like a puppy that has extra skin to grow into. In this video I didn’t even extend it all the way. I’ve had many huge adult males and big babies, but in my 7 years of rat breeding, I’ve never seen anything like him. (Edit to add: a lot of great comments! An animal version of EDS has been mentioned and it’s certainly possible. I’m not convinced though because although it would explain the extra skin, it doesn’t explain his huge size for his age. Time will tell!) A lot of people want to know his diet but his size is mostly genetics (I think?). He’s from a cross of my two best lines which I’ve been working on for 6 and 7 years. Bernard is the result of them being combined for the first time. Bernard’s diet: 1) Mazuri Rodent Breeder formula 24/7 2) Daily to bi daily fresh food is a small bit of cooked chicken, some choice veggies, a piece of fruit, and some whole oats. Please excuse the dirty scale. It’s for weighting rats and doesn’t get much love. What are your thoughts about Bernard? #rat #ratbreeder #rats
