The Department’s plan to combat TB was shelved amid strong farmer opposition – but has it gone away for good?

The idea of restricting who farmers in a particular part of the country can buy and sell cattle to seems unthinkable, but the Department strongly considered it in a bid to win the livestock industry’s never-ending battle with TB.

Amid worsening levels of TB outbreaks on farms and spiralling taxpayer spending on compensation, the Department asked its scientific advisors to examine a bold new plan to eradicate the disease: regionalisation.
