Use Gemini in Google Messages

You can chat with Gemini in the Google Messages app to draft messages, brainstorm ideas, plan events, or simply have a fun conversation.

What you need

  • An Android device with 6GB of RAM or higher.
  • Your phone’s language set to a supported language.
  • The latest version of Google Messages . Get it on Google Play.
  • A personal Google Account that you manage on your own.
    • You can’t use Gemini in Google Messages with a Google Account managed by Family Link or with a Google Workspace account.
  • Be 18 or over.
  • RCS chats turned on. Learn how to turn on RCS chats.

Start a chat with Gemini in Google Messages

Important: Chats with Gemini aren’t end-to-end encrypted.

  1. On your Android phone, open Google Messages .
  2. Tap the chat with Gemini, or tap Start chat and then Gemini.
  3. For the first time, follow any on-screen instructions.
  4. Enter your question or prompt.
    • The first time you chat with Gemini, you can explore different conversations. Just tap a suggestion above the message field.
  5. Optionally, to add a photo to your prompt, tap Show attach media screen .
  6. Tap Send message .

Examples

  • I haven't reached out to my friend in a while. Help me draft a short message to check in and reconnect.
  • Suggest a 3-course dinner menu that's impressive but manageable for a novice cook. Dietary restriction: vegetarian.
  • I'm going to a social event where I barely know anyone. Come up with a few interesting conversation starters.

Give feedback on a Gemini response

  1. Touch and hold the response you want to give feedback on.
  2. At the top, tap Good response or Bad response .
