How this SC order has made caste census inevitable

In its order on Thursday, the Supreme Court said sub-classification of Scheduled Castes is permissible and should be based on a survey for empirical data on representation of different castes in public services.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India said a Scheduled Caste parent’s children studying in St Stephen’s College, New Delhi, cannot be equated with another SC parent’s children who study in rural schools and, hence, cannot claim identical right to avail 15% reservation in jobs and admissions to educational institutions earmarked for SCs.
In effect, the SC overruled by a 6:1 majority its 20-year-old judgement that prohibited the sub-classification of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for reservation.
