About This Game

Spoiled harvest goddess Sakuna finds herself banished from her opulent celestial home to an island overrun with demons. In the untamed wilderness, she must rediscover her birthright as the daughter of a warrior god and harvest goddess by weathering the elements, fighting monsters, and cultivating rice, the source of her power. By her side in this forbidding place is her guardian Tama and a group of outcast humans. Together, these unlikely companions must join hands to tame both the soil and the demons of Hinoe Island.

Developed by Edelweiss, the indie team behind the acclaimed Astebreed, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin combines side-scrolling action with deep crafting and rice cultivation in a powerful tale about finding one's place in the world.

KEY FEATURES

Refined Side-scrolling Platforming Action
Using farm tools as weapons, chain together quick, heavy, and special attacks to take down demonic beasts, while mastering the magical “divine raiment” will be essential to grapple distant platforms, evade danger, and overcome powerful enemies.

Detailed 3D Simulation-style Gameplay
Learn the ancient art of agriculture by following detailed steps from planting to harvesting to cultivate the perfect crop. As a harvest goddess, Sakuna’s strength grows with each rice crop, with attributes such as aesthetic and flavor directly correlating to her combat abilities.

Creating a Home in the Wilderness
Sakuna’s mortal companions make weapons, armor, and meals for her using the materials and ingredients she gathers on her adventures, and completing quests for them will unlock even more options.

A Fresh Take on Japanese Mythology
The heroine is part of a pantheon of gods and demons inspired by traditional Japanese mythology but featuring many unique twists. The story and world are filled with lovingly rendered details, some familiar and some completely original.

Combat feels like Dust: An Elysian Tail but a more polished and refined. There is a large pool of special attacks for Sakuna to choose from. I love being able to parry almost everything (even falling rocks). You can even knock projectiles back, though the timing is very tight for fast arrows. I played with keyboard and mouse. Controls cannot be rebound but I got used to it and found it to be extremely fun and engaging.

Rice farming portion is surprisingly in-depth. Expect to prepare your own fertilizer, control water levels, harvest, dry, thresh and hull rice yourself. It can be time-consuming at first but can some parts can be delegated to NPCs if you don't enjoy it.

As someone who enjoys both side-scrolling beat-em-up combat and Stardew Valley-type farming simulators this has been thoroughly enjoyable. The strong story with compelling characters interwoven into the game-play tie everything together.

Visually, its a work of art that is a little reminiscent of a Miyazaki movie. The soundtrack is fantastic. Performance was pretty smooth. I had a couple of crashes but the auto-save is quite generous.
Also you can pet the dog, the cat, and carry both around. There does not seem to be a button to put them down. Carry them forever.

As comedian Mitch Hedberg once said: "Rice is great when you're hungry and you want 2,000 of something." You can buy it anywhere. Everywhere. But those grains don't come from nowhere – they are grown in huge flooded paddy fields, filled with workers who painstakingly harvest the stalks, dry them on racks, hull them, and process them into white rice. It's not a process many are familiar with, but every single grain of rice has been through it, and you just shovel 2,000 of them into your mouth like it doesn't even matter. Rice just wants to feel appreciated, you know.

Enter **Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin**, possibly the only ever game to lovingly recreate, with great care and attention to detail, the arduous task of rice farming. What's more, it does so with the punishing addition of not actually telling you how to farm rice. At least, not in a tutorial. Sakuna: Of Rice And Ruin doles out its information slowly, and secretly, in the form of NPC dialogue and hard-to-find scrolls that give more information. It also doesn't tell you that, though.

The story is about a spoiled, exiled goddess who must learn the values of humility, teamwork, and discipline through manual labor and ridding the world of demons. Each day, Sakuna has a certain level of energy, provided by the meal she ate last night, to perform a few tasks. This can be tending to the rice paddy – sowing the seeds, fertilizing the soil, pulling weeds, catching pests, or harvesting and milling the grains – or it can be spent out in the world, in various action-platforming levels filled with monsters. In both cases, Sakuna starts ignorant, unskilled, and weak. Every enemy poses a real threat, and every stage of rice growth will leave you wondering if you did it right this time. Improving the rice will enhance the meals you eat the day before, giving Sakuna extra boosts to her experience, health, and strength. Exploring areas as much as possible will level up the general map, opening new places with new forageable items that can be turned into new equipment or fertilizer.

The farming and life simulation part of the game is done in full 3D, where Sakuna can run between the blacksmith, tailor, rice paddy, and main building to complete the first few tasks of the day and furnish herself with new equipment. But the demon-slaying part takes place in an almost entirely different style: a 2.5D action-platformer, in which Sakuna must use her hoes, shovels, and sickles to fight monsters, along with her godly grappling-hook Divine Raiment, which looks a lot like a big, glowing scarf¹.

---

Overall, "Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin" combines the delicate art of rice farming with fast-paced combat, creating a unique and engaging adventure. While it has a learning curve and lacks clear tutorials, its deep systems and charming cast make it worth exploring. 🌾🔥

I think getting to the final fourth of a game only to have a large chunk of your permanent upgrades you've earned taken and scattered across stages you've already played might be the most hostile method of artificially extending play time ever I've ever seen.

I love rice.

There's clunkiness in combat which is half of the game. The worst that this game has done is controls for the PC. It's highly recommended to play it with a controller. Even navigating through the menu with kb+m is atrociously bad.
Still overall good if you can get past the control scheme problem. The farming side of the game feeds into your combat performance and your combat performance feeds back into the farming side of the game.

But I bought it for Sakuna.

I sincerely think this is one of the best action games ever made.
The combat is shockingly expressive!
Cancels, movement, OTGs, being airborne for 20+ seconds, it has what you want.
The farming is good too!

The game is so soothing and does not require too much brain power to understand its mechanics. Just farm rice, explore dungeons, craft weapons, enjoy dinner and repeat the next day. Quite a fun game to relax. Music is quite good and matches the aesthetics of the world they reside.

I'm not much for ARPG and I'm not much for farming sims, and yet I came out absolutely loving the 40 hours it took me to beat this game from start to finish. I bought it on sale back in May because I've been following the lead artist for a long time, and I found it was well worth the money!

I wasn't particularly smitten by the farming aspects or the combat by themselves, but I really feel it all flowed into a nice sort of everyday routine playing as Sakuna. I kind of dreaded planting rice with a controller, but it was all part of the experience, and the fact the character is complaining as you go ended up charming rather than annoying as one may expect. Useless goddess is one of my favorite character archetypes, and if you enjoy it too, you'll have a blast.

If there's something that truly stands out next to the art is the quality of the English translation. The script was beautifully crafted, and I really appreciated the lengths they went into making it feel alive while being written in such a flowery old-prose-y way. I didn't want to leave a single line unread!

I'm not sure what type of player I'd recommend this game to, but if you enjoy micromanagement and don't mind the more repetitive tasks you'll do well with the farming aspect, and that's the main component after all. If you just want to see cute anime characters going through found family antics while trying to figure out how to maximize the combat boosts you get from taking the time to make a proper 3 course meal with like 400 different options, you'll enjoy it too! It's a lovely game overall.

The farming mechanics are in depth enough it's ruined the farming genre for me forever more than likely, and the side scroller combat feels great even as someone that typically doesn't like them.
Note that the default controls for mouse and keyboard will feel weird or even stupid. Do not change them. After about an hour of play they will make perfect sense.

the game takes about 40ish hours to play and is really fun, the combat is very fluid and the abilities are amazing. The rice farming is also rewarding.

However there is a lot about this game that makes no sense and quite boring at times.

But 10/10 would recommend, especially with the anime out.

What I picked up on a whim has become one of my favorite farming-sim style games.

They fuse side-scrolling, Odin Sphere/Dust: An Elysian Tale style combat with a rice-farming sim and, by God, if it isn't awesome. Charming characters, lots of voice acting, a highly satisfying feedback loop between the exploration, combat, and farming in the game, and a bangin' soundtrack.

Don't recommend to people with a high sensitivity to anime-feeling games or farm-sims, obviously. Outside of those exceptions, this is a great title!
