Site-69 is a fucking joke.
Let me paint a picture for you. The Foundation. Cold, corporate, bureaucratic, sure — but real people do actually work here. Real people with emotions, a love for life, a sense of humour. You get the idea.
Every now and then, an emotional/life-loving/humour-sensing mind might want to escape from drab monotony for just a few moments. I think that's pretty natural. And what better way to do that, if you're a mind that's had the creativity crushed out of it over years and years of stifling bureacratic bullshit, than to — and please forgive me if I'm getting this wrong — than to "play a prank." I think such a mind could be forgiven for such an idea.
So, every few months, some so-called "Senior Researcher" or "Site Director" or "HMCL Supervisor" sends a prank email to one of their staff, instructing them to:
Transfer
IMMEDIATELY
to Site-69.
In context, and if you too have had all creativity stomped out of you, it might even be funny. It’ll be framed as a tongue-in-cheek punishment for some perceived malfeasance on the part of the recipient — not a very serious one, for sure, and certainly not worth any real punishment — but it'll be enough to make any junior researcher sweat a little. Or maybe it’ll be the 'reward' for some poor researcher’s 10th anniversary with the Foundation. Something like that. It doesn't matter.
Once the jig is up, though, and the joke is revealed, the pranker and the prankee will have a little laugh with each other, and it'll be a nice little bonding experience, and the victim will feel a little more like they're part of the team.
But, after a few minutes of laughter, and after sharing the prank with a few nearby colleagues, and after everyone involved gets a moment to reflect… the funny number stops being funny. The email is quietly deleted, and everyone gets on with their day.
But the system never saw it as a joke. The reassignment is recorded. The transfer goes through. Somewhere inside DEEPWELL an old function triggers, written in a programming language only a handful of older researchers understand, and a bit silently flips from zero to one.
The victim goes home and dutifully begins packing their things, barely aware of what they're doing. They eat food, they brush their teeth, they go to bed. The next morning they wake up, feeling well-rested for quite possibly the first time ever. They say goodbye to their family — who hardly look up from their breakfast — go to the nearest airport via whatever means are available to them, and board the next plane to Site-69.
They won't return.
Your family won't notice you're gone. Your friends won't notice you're gone. Your previous Site won't notice you're gone. Even your boss or supervisor or whoever it was who sent you the prank email in the first place won't notice. They might remember you briefly, if prompted, but no one ever will. You'll be replaced without fanfare and everyone's lives will continue, without you, entirely unaffected by whether you're there or not.
If you're reading this, welcome to Site-69.
Settle in. Find a hammock, we have plenty to spare. If you know any stories, or any songs by heart, or if you have any nice memories that you'd like to keep, you should write them down. We're all family here, but keep your wits about you. You'll quickly get a sense of who you can trust — anyone who got here up to a year before you did, anyone who arrives up to a year from now, and that's it. Don't even lend toothpaste to anyone else.
Good luck.

Site-69
Official Designation: Unknown
General Information
Site-69
Founded: Unknown — prior to 2004, at least
Founding Director: Unknown
Location: Unknown — somewhere unsurvivably cold year-round, with no satellite connection, but not in the Arctic Circle
Site Function: Unknown — speculation: Hell
Facilities:
- Armoury: Standard task force protective equipment, enough firearms to supply an army, and nearly zero ammunition.
- Hangar: Two old biplanes with frontal propellers. No fuel.
- Vehicle Bay: A light utility vehicle sometimes comes to drop off supplies. Empty otherwise.
- Server Room: 4 rows of server racks. All powered off.
- Cafeteria: Hot meals twice a day and snacks whenever you like. You've got Gavin and Niamh to thank for that. They're the only thing keeping this place tolerable.
- Containment cells: We've converted 6 containment cells to living quarters. A few hammocks and a bit of personal storage space in each one.
- WC: There's only one toilet on site. Sorry.

Me. |
We don't bother with roles anymore. There are no Doctors, no Researchers, no Directors. It takes a little while to shake the new folk out of their labels, and when you've been here long enough they have a habit of coming back — but in the interim, it's much better this way. Nothing worse than two Site Directors who both think they have absolute authority. There's nothing to research and nothing to direct.

Hangar
No significant events.
Servers
Several rows of server racks are arranged in the site's data centre. About half of the slots in the racks are filled — around 50 servers in total. Several wired connectors jut from the rear of each one, trailing to the floor in bundles of hundreds of cables that terminate in random points around the room. There is not a single blinking light.
Pantry

Cafeteria

Office
Audio feed available
No-one is in the office. The monitors at a few workstations have been left turned on, their activity lights blinking, but their screens dimmed.
Cell 1
Secondary containment cell 1 has been retrofitted as living quarters for two people. Two hammocks are strung up, one against the left wall and the other against the right. One hammock is empty; the other contains Selena Throe and Lars Heidenstam, both of whom are asleep.
Cell 2
Secondary containment cell 2 has been retrofitted as living quarters for three people. Jess Brommer, Niamh Palmer and James Noble are each sleeping in a hammock.
Cell 3
A sticky note has been posted over the camera lens, obscuring the interior of secondary containment cell 3 from view.
Cell 4
Secondary containment cell 4 has been retrofitted as living quarters for three people. Vance Bungalee and Gavin Webster are each sleeping in a hammock. The remaining hammock is empty, though the arrangement of fabrics in it suggests that somebody was sleeping here recently.
Cell 5
Secondary containment cell 5 has been retrofitted as living quarters for two people. Two hammocks are strung up against the left and right wall respectively, with Ibrahim Milkier asleep in the left and Frankie Welsh asleep in the right. Frankie's hammock is surrounded by pictures drawn on copy paper attached to the wall, but the detail and colours render them illegible when limited by the camera's bitrate.
Cell 6
Secondary containment cell 6 has been retrofitted as living quarters for two people. Isaiah Micklewood and Stefan Dallaglio are asleep in two hammocks.
Main Containment Cell
The primary containment cell is silent.

Foyer
No significant events.
Armoury
A collection of protective equipment, with areas of the room designated for environmental and combat provisions. There are 6 standard environmental protection suits. There are 31 sets of combat protective armour, which bear a similar design to those used in mobile task forces. There are sufficient firearms to fully stock those who would wear the armour. Some of the ammunition lockers have been left open, and of the lockers that are both open and facing the camera, all are empty.
Toilet
Storage
Mac Cratewood enters the storage room via its westernmost entrance in the armoury corridor. He is visibly injured.
Without moving from the doorway, he scans the shelves and heaps of junk in the room one by one.
His expression changes. Eyes fixed on a target, he stumbles over a few luggage cases that are in between him and a shelf not visible to the camera.
He pauses at the shelf, eyes aimed high. In one smooth motion, he stretches with his full body to reach the top shelf and retrieves something from it. He immediately doubles over, presumably in pain, and the object falls to the floor. It is a first aid kit.
He lowers himself into a sitting position on the floor, leaning against the shelf, kicking a suitcase out of the way.
He opens the first aid kit, retrieves a large bundle of bandages, unrolls a length of it, and holds it in his hands.
He continues staring at the bandage.
Vehicle Bay
The vehicle bay is empty.
Corridor: Servers
No activity in the corridor that connects the hangar, server room and pantry to the containment ring.
Corridor: Offices
No activity in the corridor that connects the administrative rooms to the containment ring.
Corridor: Cells
No activity in the corridor that connects the secondary containment cells to the primary containment ring.
Corridor: North Ring
No activity in the north ring corridor.
Corridor: East Ring
No activity in the east ring corridor.
Corridor: South Ring
No activity in the south ring corridor.
Corridor: West Ring
Mac Cratewood is sitting on the floor of the west ring corridor, next to the primary containment airlock door. His clothes are wet and so is some of the floor around him.
He uses his right hand to apply pressure to the injury again. He switches to his left hand, then back to his right, trying a different place on his body each time.
He climbs to his feet, using the wall as support, and starts to slowly make his way south towards the armoury corridor.
Corridor: Armoury
Mac Cratewood slowly staggers into view, coming from the west ring corridor. He is injured. His gait is stiff and erratic, as if his motion is impeded by some force, or as if parts of some of his limbs are not entirely functional. Regardless, he's able to make it to the door of the storage room.
He pauses for a long while, using the doorhandle to support his weight with one hand while he clutches the injured part of himself with the other. His clothes are still wet, and so is the path that he's walked to get here.
Finally, he opens the door and heads into the storage room.
Exterior
An icy plain extends as far as the camera resolution permits, covered in snow and stone, and dotted with the occasional tree. A persistent mist obscures anything further than about 300m away.
