Butler school board approves consolidation plan; 4 elementary schools closing

BUTLER, Pa. โ€” The Butler Area School District Board voted and approved a consolidation plan Wednesday night that will close four of the districtโ€™s elementary schools.

Broad Street, Clearfield, Meridian and Oakland elementary schools will all close at the end of the current school year. A fifth school, Center Avenue Elementary School, will be converted into a K-12 school for students with special needs.

Supporters of the proposal said the district can now add and expand programs with the money itโ€™s saving by closing the schools amid declining enrollment.

Opponents, however, questioned whether the consolidation was best for the students.

โ€œAre we so arrogant that we can throw away the voice of the customer?โ€ asked board member John Conrad.

In the end, seven of the nine school leaders voted to approve the plan.

The school board said students' new school assignments have already been made and parents will be notified of them in the days to come.
