The main function of the chamber is to represent Harbor City/Harbor Gateway business and all local residents, at every level of government by supporting beneficial legislation and opposing unnecessary or detrimental legislation. As the community advocate at the city, county, state and federal levels, the chamber works through volunteer committees to improve business and consumer relations. Funded by membership investment dues, the chamber truly reflects the community spirit that is evident among Harbor City/Harbor Gateway businesses. Facts about Harbor City/Harbor Gateway The Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce would liketowelcomeyou to the Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Community, one of the fastest growing communities in the greater Los Angeles area. Nestled in the shadows of the beautiful Palos Verdes Hill s, in the southerly section of the City of Los Angeles. Harbor City/Harbor Gateway is a community within the city of Los Angeles. As such, its public services are provided by the city: Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department and all other city services. Because of our close proximity to the Worldport (Port of Los Angeles) and Los Angeles International Airport, Harbor City/Harbor Gateway offers a choice location for business and industry. Quality of I ife is to Harbor City/Harbor Gateway's 36,000 residents, perhaps the most compelling feature of the community large enough to offer a full range of retail, professional and commercial services, but still maintains its wholesome "Small Town" atmosphere in which family-oriented activities thrive. Beyond the community boundaries, but readily accessible, are beaches, sport center, cultural centers and several major southern California attractions. Fishing Derby The Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce sponsors an annual fishing Derby for Harbor area children at Machado Lake though the co-operation of Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department, local Lion s Club, PTA sand the business community. This gives over800 children an opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled dayoffishing, many of whom will experience th is forthefirsttime! Lunches are provided by the local business community. Harbor Regional Park The Harbor Regional Park is composed of 231 acres of land including Machado Lake. The lake was originally site of two of the largest Southern California Indian Villages: Saungna and Masaunga. facilities 1 . youth campgrounds 2. picnic area 3. children play area 4. fishing 5. tours of the wildlife sanctuary 6. bird watching 7. parcourse fitness center 8. bike path History The Dominguez family owned the area including the lake in 1 784 as part of Rancho San Pedro. SO years later the area was decreed to the Sepulveda family as a partofthe Rancho Palos Verdesgrantby Governor Figueroa. JoseAntonioMachadomarriedtheSepulvedawidow and managed the ranch forthe family. Their adobe sat high on a bluff overlooking the lake at five points, now the intersection of Palos Verdes Drive North, Gaffey, Anaheim, Normandieand Vermont Avenues which were Indian trails at the time. The lake was soon known as Machado Lake. The whole area including the lake was annexed in 1906 to Los Angeles which renamed it Harbor Lake. Determined to have access to the San Pedro harbor, Los Angeles obtained a shoestring strip of land that same year. It measured 1/2 - 1 miles wide and extended along the east side of Western Ave. to within one mileofWilmington. The plan to dredge a channel from the west basin in Wilmington to the newly annexed Harbor Lake, thereby allowing the ocean-going vessels to come directly into Harbor City, the proposed Port of Los Angeles. But Los Angeles soon decided on a less costly plan: annex the cities of San Pedro and Wilmington. In 1909 both San Pedro and Wilmington voted fo r consolidation. Meanwhile, the area continued to grow and subdivided into small farms, in 1911 W.I. Hollingsworth Co. bought up the area. The firm began subdividing the land, by 1912, the community began to develop and now is known as the Harbor City/Harbor Gateway area. TheCityof Los Angeles acquired Bixby Slough in 1953 and developed Harbor Regional Park under the supervision of the Department of Recreation and Parks. With the support of Izaak Walton League Harbor Lake was renamed Machadolakein 1988. Description
San Pedro / Wilmington Skills Center. PART OF A SERIES: Included in the series are source materials that were collected and analyzed by Hufstedler, Kaus & Ettinger. The series consists of the following: notes, memoranda and reports from meetings held with religious leaders and community organizations; an informational packet describing the city of Los Angeles' employee Wellness Program, which was launched in 1985; a photocopy of the indictment of Lawrence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno, and Stacey Koon, the four LAPD officers involved in the Rodney King incident; essays and reports about police violence and civil disorder; and a packet of materials related to the San Pedro/Wilmington Skills Center, an occupational outreach organization in South Los Angeles. Relevant information from these materials was synthesized into a background chapter of the Commission report by the firm.
