In Japan, Green hydrogen produced in Japan will be used for the heat demands of industries.(^^♪ It is not imported Green hydrogen, and it is not for electricity.(^_-)-☆ Tokyo Electric Power Company(TEPCO), which is the 1st sales electricity retailer in Japan, will supply vapor produced by Green hydrogen to Suntory (famous for YAMAZAKI whiskey) and Suzuki(a major motor company) as a heat in 2026. ( ^^) _旦~~ Japan has a renewable energy curtailment problem"(-""-)", but it will be solved by producing green hydrogen as an energy storage system.(^^)/ Also, Japan has been engaging in a carbon-neutral electricity scheme. However, the domestic energy consumption is about 30% for electricity and 70% for heat. The demand for heat should be carbon-neutral as early as possible. Then, TEPCO will start the Power to Gas business for the heat demand. (I guess Tokyo Gas or Osaka Gas should do that because they have an advantage in the heating business) Japan will import Green hydrogen from overseas and use it around the coastal areas, which will be supplied by pipeline to industrial facilities there. However, inland and mountainous regions are not good for hydrogen pipeline networks. Transportation by a hydrogen tank truck is not good for cost-effectiveness. So, renewable energy-onsite green hydrogen production for local consumption is the rationale model.( ^^) _旦~~ Japan accelerates the Green Transformation(GX) strategically and constantly. We will be setting up production facilities at our Iwakuni-Ohtake Works for carbon nanotube (CNT) pellicles suited to use in next-generation High NA (numerical aperture), high-output EUV lithography systems, which is indispensable in further reducing the size and increasing the production efficiency of semiconductors. There is particular demand growth for High NA (numerical aperture of 0.55), high-output (600W or above) lithography, which represents the next generation of EUV lithography technology. SK-On, one of the big 3 battery companies in Korea, has succeeded in jointly developing a polymer electrolyte for lithium metal batteries that can be operated even at room temperature. SK-On announced on the 16th that it has developed a new polymer electrolyte "SIPE" (single-ion conducting polymer electrolyte) with Professor Hadi Khani's research team at the University of Texas. Polymer electrolytes are attracting attention as next-generation solid batteries because they are inexpensive and easy to manufacture. However, the fact that the ion conductivity is lower than that of the oxide or sulfide system and is operated only at a high temperature of 70 to 80°C was considered a challenge to overcome. SIPE solved this problem by improving ion conductivity and lithium ion transport. Compared to conventional polymer electrolytes, the ion conductivity at room temperature was increased by about 10 times, and the lithium ion transport rate was increased by nearly five times. When the lithium-ion conductivity and transport rate increase, the battery output power and charging performance also improve. As a result of the experiment, the battery, to which the SIPE is applied, maintained a discharge capacity of 77% even during fast charging/discharging compared to low charging/discharging. In addition, SIPE has high mechanical durability, can be mass-produced, and has excellent thermal safety, so it can withstand high temperatures of 250°C or higher. The company expected that the application of SIPE to next-generation composite solid-state batteries will improve charging speed and low-temperature performance. SK-ON is developing polymer-oxide composite and sulfide solid state batteries. It aims to produce pilot prototypes in 2025 and 2026, and commercialized prototypes in 2028 and 2029, respectively. Since 2020, SK- On has jointly developed a solid electrolyte for realizing lithium metal batteries with a team led by Professor John Goodenough of the University of Texas, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. After Professor John Goosenough's death in June last year, Professor, Hadi Khani is leading the research team. "Based on the results of this study, we expect to be able to speed up the development of solid-state batteries with polymer electrolytes," said Kim Tae-kyung, head of SK-On's Next Generation Battery Center. 🚢Carbon Emission News👣 China has announced plans for a new method to measure the ‘carbon content’ of its products – an issue that has caused tension with some of its trading partners. This move, seen as a key step in reaching its climate goals, comes amid a push by the European Union and other countries for tougher carbon standards overseas. The new “carbon footprint management system” detailed by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment will go into effect in 2027, setting standards for measuring carbon emissions for about 100 key products throughout the Chinese economy, according to a policy document, Reuters said. [LS Materials breaks ground on EV parts plant] Korean company aims to become global aluminum parts leader in EV sector LS Materials’ subsidiary HAIMK began construction of an aluminum parts plant for electric vehicles in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, on Wednesday. According to LS Materials, the plant will begin the mass production of battery cases with an annual capacity that can be used for 300,000 EVs in the first quarter of next year. Hong Kong's First EV Battery Processing Plant, Boosting Global Recycling Efforts On June 14, 2024, Envision Greenwise Holdings Limited (“Envision Greenwise”, 1783. HK), together with its wholly-owned subsidiary Chun Yang International (HK) Co., Limited (“Chun Yang”), hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for Hong Kong's first EV Battery Processing Plant. The event took place at lots T2 & T3 of Hong Kong EcoPark. Mr. Tse Chin-wan, BBS, JP, Secretary for Environment and Ecology of Hong Kong, delivered the opening speech at the ceremony, after Mr. Kwok Chun Sing, MH, Chairman of Envision Greenwise Group started a welcome address to all the guests attending the ceremony. Ms. Kwok Ho Yee as the COO of Envision Greenwise and the managing director of Chun Yang especially introduced the importance of this breakthrough project. The ceremony also honored the presence of about 150 distinguished guests, including representatives from the Environment and Ecology Bureau, EcoPark, top enterprises in the electric vehicle and battery sectors such as Tesla (Hong Kong) (TSLA. US) and Gotion High-tech (002074. SZ), the Hong Kong Motor Traders Association (including most Hong Kong car brands), and the Hong Kong Recycling Chamber of Commerce, etc. Shortly, Hong Kong's EV Battery Processing Plant (“the Plant”) will be built up on this ground which covers a total area of 9,420 square meters, to provide sustainable solutions such as cascade utilization and new material regeneration for Lithium-ion batteries. Besides, the Plant will feature automated production lines integrated with artificial intelligence technology to optimize Lithium-ion batterie resource recycling. Once completed, the Plant is expected to become a benchmark project for EV battery industry chain's circular development in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area (GBA), as well as to attract top global talents in the battery industry, thereby promoting sustainable development and enhancing Hong Kong's reputation and status in innovative green technology. The Plant will also act as a “super-connector” to facilitate GBA enterprises’ entry into global markets, and thus to accelerate the creation of a new paradigm to promote high-quality development in EV battery recycling. In recent years, Envision Greenwise has actively expanded into the EV battery recycling sector. In 2022, it obtained Hong Kong’ s first full set of professional licenses for EV battery disposal, transportation, and export. Its approved total dismantling and processing capacity is now at the forefront of the industry. Mr. Kwok Chun Sing, MH, the Chairman of Envision Greenwise, stated that this Plant is a crucial part in building the Group's global supply chain service system for the EV battery recycling and circular economy. Commencement of a Joint Study for the Establishment of an Ammonia Supply Chain Based in the Tomakomai Area of Hokkaido Summary: On April 25, Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Ltd., Hokkaido Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., IHI Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Mitsui & Co., Ltd., and Tomakomai Futo Co., Ltd., (the “six companies”), have started a joint study for the establishment of an ammonia supply chain based in the Tomakomai area of Hokkaido, Japan. The six companies will work on studies related to the establishment of facilities for receiving, storing, and supplying ammonia from overseas in the Tomakomai area, as well as surveys aimed at expanding the use of ammonia throughout Northern Japan. The Tomakomai area, where the six companies aim to develop a base, has vast land available for the installation of facilities required for the establishment of an ammonia supply chain, such as the possibility of adding storage tanks to meet future demand increases. Additionally, as the largest marine transportation hub in Northern Japan, the area has shipping routes accessible to both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean, enabling the supply of ammonia not only to demand sites close to the Tomakomai area but also to hydrogen demand sites throughout Northern Japan by utilizing domestic vessels and other means. Going Forward: In parallel with this joint study, the six companies are discussing the establishment of an ammonia supply chain with Kushiro Power Station Co., Ltd., Nippon Beet Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Oenon Holdings, Inc., which are potential customers for ammonia utilization. The six companies will utilize their respective technologies and expertise to establish an ammonia supply chain in the broader Northern Japan region, starting from the Tomakomai area, aiming to expand the use of ammonia and contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.
