Apeel is a family of plant-derived coatings that fresh food growers, suppliers, and retailers use to keep produce fresh. Apeel is the only postharvest solution that creates an optimal microclimate inside every piece of produce, which leads to extended shelf life and more time for you to enjoy the fruits and vegetables you purchase. By staying fresh and delicious for longer, Apeel-Protected Produce helps prevent waste, which in turn conserves precious resources like water and avoids greenhouse gas emissions to help mitigate climate change.
Because fresh produce is a living, breathing thing, Apeel’s plant-based protection simply slows down its respiration, as well as the associated oxidation and water loss. This allows for the produce to maintain its freshness for longer, similar to the effects of storing produce in the refrigerator.
We have tested and sold our plant-based protection on the following products: avocados, limes, lemons, mandarins, oranges, grapefruit, mangoes, plastic-free cucumbers and organic apples. The availability of these products in stores is dependent on the region, and our supplier and retailer programs, which may change over time.
Apeel is shipped to fresh produce suppliers who usually apply our product in their packing houses after the fruit has been picked. This is where produce is often inspected, cleaned and packaged as it moves from the ground to grocery store shelves.
No, Apeel is colorless, odorless, and tasteless on produce.
All fruits and vegetables, regardless of whether Apeel has been applied, are subject to food safety laws of the country where the produce was grown as well as the food safety laws of the country where the produce is sold.
While safe and intended to be eaten, if you prefer, you can remove the Apeel coating by washing under warm running water and using mechanical agitation (e.g., either using a vegetable scrub brush or by rubbing with your hands). Peeling is also another good option if you want to be certain.
Yes! We have a product, Organipeel, that is OMRI Listed® for the growers and distributors of USDA Certified Organic produce.
Apeel is made of purified mono- and diglycerides that have been derived from plant oils to mimic the natural protection already existing on fruits and vegetables. Mono- and diglycerides belong to a class of naturally-occurring molecules known as lipids, which are a crucial building block in nature that help to store energy and provide structure in the cells of plants and our own bodies. Additionally, Apeel for organic produce, called Organipeel, contains citric acid, an ingredient that is found widely in many fruits, particularly citrus.
Yes. Apeel is made of mono- and diglycerides, which are naturally-occuring in all fruits and vegetables. This ingredient has a long history of safe consumption and has been verified by regulatory authorities around the world.
Mono- and diglycerides were recognized as safe for perishable and non-perishable food products by the FDA in 1989.
In addition, these lipids have been used in food products since the 1930’s, and have been reviewed time and time again by publicly-available scientific studies and regulatory literature demonstrating their safe use in food.
And of course, we test our product to confirm that impurities like pesticides, allergens, and trans fats are not present.
Avoiding and eliminating the presence of allergens is considered throughout our manufacturing process. We do not source our materials from regulated allergens like milk, egg, fish, crustacean and molluscan shellfish, tree nuts (almond nuts, brazil nuts, cashew nuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecan nuts, pine nuts, pistachio nuts or walnuts), peanuts, coconut, sesame, wheat, cereals with gluten, soy, sulfites, celery, lupin, or mustard. Plus, we do not manufacture our product in any facilities that process any of these allergens.
And even if this wasn’t the case, our purification process would eliminate any allergens.
But just to be extra safe, we consistently test our product to confirm the absence of allergy-causing compounds.
No. Our products are not derived from genetically engineered plant material.
The ingredients in Apeel are not derived from animal sources. This means that consumers who choose to follow a diet that does not incorporate animal products or products that have been derived from animal sources, may consider Apeel to be in alignment with their dietary choices.
