A lot depends on the nature of the political and economic system and the state of society. The US was more successful than the Soviet Union, although not everything was bad in the Soviet Union. What the West managed better than the Eastern block, was the development of a consumer society, which in turn was very attractive.

The US became an empire through the 20th century, secured by oceans on either side, with a large territory and massive resources, with a big population and a competitive economy. It had an engine inside itself.

China is now surpassing the US, because it also has a competitive economy, a huge population, and a big territory and resources, and coupled with Russia, can get even more. Even if the US were at the top of their game, they would have hard time competing, because the numbers are in China's favor. Think about it, there are a lot of companies in China, not only competing against some foreign adversaries but between themselves. If one fails, others take their place. Even if the US managed to somehow isolate China, that competitiveness wouldn't go away.

We can see that even Russia doesn't crash with all the sanctions imposed. If Western companies leave, there are enough domestic producers willing and able to take their place. China, of course, is much stronger than Russia.

It is foolish to think the Cold War against the Soviet Union can be replicated. The collapse of the Soviet Union came after foolish decisions were made by its leadership, and because parts of the elites wanted the collapse to occur, so they could create a different society. There was also a lot of misplaced optimism, that new oligarchic elites could become equal partners in a globalized American empire.

We live in different times now. Elites in Russia and China are aware the West will never treat them as equals. China also understands that it is surpassing the West and that there is no need to submit to the will of Washington. Internal dynamics are such, that progress will continue, although most likely not at such a fast pace. But that is not necessary, because the US and its satellites themselves can't grow at a faster pace.

Also, China can produce enough to keep the consumer society going, it also is able to churn out cultural production, thus taking away the key advantage the US had over the Soviet Union.
