Here for sale we have an impeccable example of a 1976 hardtail Stratocaster, finished in the quintessentially 70's, and highly collectible mocha colourway. It is complete with its original hard case, unused ash tray bridge cover (still in bubble wrap), the owner's manual and hang tag, and lots of other case candy.
This guitar has spent much of its life in the original hard case, and it really shows - it is a collector's grade instrument in the truest form. Included is a load of case candy, all of which is original to the guitar. This goes to show the level of care that has been taken over this guitar for its 48 years.
Dating way back to the late 70's, this Strat hails from Fender's Fullerton factory in Southern California, USA. 70's Strats may not have the same following as those from the 60's, but anyone who knows these guitars knows there's something unique to them that makes them play and sound like no other era of Fender, before or since. Fender's build quality, although always top-notch, is particularly great on this example, with smooth frets and crackle-free electronics. Fret wear is minimal with plenty of life left in them (see photos).
All hardware on this guitar is 100% original, and it feels, plays and sounds every bit as good as it looks. Please see the photos for a detailed up-close look at the neck and body, and see for yourself the excellent condition. Only two areas of small-scale damage exist; on the lower part of body near the jack, and next to the bottom strap button. The beautifully rich original finish hasn't yellowed or darkened. The wood grain on this example pops right out at you, especially once you hit that perfect lighting. Truly a piece of art!
Being a hard-tail, the surprisingly light 3.85kg guitar has resonance for days and is just so pleasing to the ear, even when played acoustically.
The neck features the archetypical 70's Fender micro-tilt adjustment screw and 3-bolt neck plate. The action is sweet and low as any Strat should be, and the C-profile makes playing an absolute dream. Easy truss rod adjustments aside, the bullet truss rod cover suits the 70's retro decor aesthetic to a T, and looks so perfectly at home atop the eye-catching large headstock.
Opening the excellently maintained original hard case is akin to taking a peak inside a time-capsule. As well as the most vibrant red case interior you'll find for a case this age, there's also a whole host of goodies including:
- The unmarked owners manual with matching serial number
- The original and unused ashtray bridge cover
- The original inspection hang tag from the Fullerton factory
- The original set of case keys, hex keys and adjustment tools
- A 70's Fender metal buckle monogram gold / brown / black strap
- An unopened set of 70's Fender strings
- An unopened set of 70's Gibson strings
- A tin of vintage Gibson and Sharkfin plectrums
To come across a Fender of this calibre and condition is far from an everyday occurrence. If you have been searching for the definitive 70's Strat, then look no further.

freekin Awesome guitar Hardtail strats are so light and cool this 1975 sounds awesome i own 5 seventies Hardtails they rock!!!!!!!
Effing Amazing!!
Does this even need to be reviewed? A super lightweight hardtail 74 strat? Doesn't get any better. I traded out necks with my other 74 hardtail and they're both killer fiddles. Get one. Now!!
Fender Stratocaster Hardtail (1971 - 1977)
The Strato Hardtail I've always wanted, but I'm happy with the sound and playability. The picking strength is directly reflected in the sound as it is, and even small nuances can be easily expressed. Also, since there is no tremolo block, it is extremely lightweight and easy to handle.
Good product.
Good product.
75 Hardtail
This thing shreds. Nice and lightweight and pickups sound incredible. Perfect gig day rocker.
