Sudden Trance Onset Disorder

Sudden Trance Onset Disorder (STOD) is a MUD characterized by the sudden onset of trance-like states that significantly disrupt an individual's cognitive and behavioral functioning. 

To meet the diagnostic criteria for Sudden Trance Onset Disorder, an individual must exhibit the following symptoms, which must persist for a minimum duration of one month and cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning:

  1. Sudden Onset: The individual experiences sudden, involuntary, and transient episodes of trance-like states.
  2. Trance-like State: During the episodes, the person displays a marked alteration in consciousness or awareness, often described as a dream-like or dissociative state.
  3. Impaired Awareness: The individual's awareness of and responsiveness to the immediate environment is significantly reduced or absent during the trance-like episodes.
  4. Involuntary Nature: The trance-like episodes are not intentionally induced or simulated by the individual.
  5. Frequency and Duration: The episodes occur multiple times per month and typically last from a few minutes to several hours.
  6. Amnesia: Following the trance-like episodes, the individual may have partial or complete amnesia for the events that occurred during the episode.
  7. Distress and Impairment: The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
