Black Scythe

Cracks of thunder echoed throughout the complex, the sounds rattling ancient layers of dust from hidden alcoves all throughout. Dusk fought fiercely, far more befitting the status of a demigod, compared to how he'd fled so quickly back at Storm Spire.

It probably helped that he had an incredibly vast generator producing tons of power for him. Throughout the rest of the Throne, the electrical traps and weapons had been naught but an annoyance, but here, at the heart of the complex, Dusk could clearly access everything it had to give. Black Scythe was fast for his size, yes. But Dusk moved like lightning given form.

He was hopelessly outnumbered. The Phantoms could not be killed, only slowed down, and yet Dusk was easily keeping up even against two dozen of them fighting alongside Black Scythe.

"You had the element of surprise last time, tyrant. This time, I hold the advantage," Dusk snarled, parrying a strike by Shadow and tossing him aside, then slicing through several Phantoms behind him. "And now you throw... what? Pieces of your misbegotten kind's history at me? Too chickens*** to do it yourself?"

The only response Dusk got was an ear-s***tering roar that cracked the wall far behind him and left his ears ringing. The Supreme Warboss's massive form swooped in to follow up on it, but Dusk juked his overhead swing and sliced at his side and back as he rushed past, cutting down a few more Phantoms as he moved to the other end of the platform.

"You're one to talk about being chickens***," Black Scythe rumbled, turning around slowly. Dusk's blade hadn't even scratched the surface of his armor, but the electricity from it still flowed through. Merely standing on the platform set the nerves in his feet ablaze; every strike from Thunderfury sent that same tingling through his skin, just beneath his armor.

"How many times do you think you'll have to hit me before I fall? While I..." he sneered, raising his namesake arm blade, "I need only hit you once. Which do you think will come first?"

Dusk snorted. "You won't hit me, not like this. However long it takes, I've got the time to wait until you fall over and bleed to death."

"I'll carve that into your tombstone," Black Scythe retorted, rushing across the platform at him once more, flanked by several of the phantoms. This fight would go on for quite a while.

Ugly thing, isn't it? Well, Orvtre wants it alive, so no slicing and dicing this one, I guess. On the other hand, it regenerates. Maybe a little slicing and dicing.

As its mostly focused on Rho and Orvtre at the moment, I decided to go for a more subtle approach, sneaking around behind it before moving to get closer. Not as easy as it sounds, since it was constantly moving around to track Rho and attempt to get a bead on him, and the dweevil legs let it turn a hell of a lot faster than an ordinary Gatling Groink. Add to that all the smoke pumping out of the pipes on its back, smells friggin awful. Once I'd gotten close enough, though, I simply extended a blade and cut a nice chunk out of its back left leg.

Instantly the Corkoink stumbled back in my direction as its leg gave out, only not crushing me because Quicksilver dove in and yanked me out of range, as I knew he would. Rho and Orvtre took the moment of weakness to pounce, slamming into its face full bore and sending it tumbling into the back wall, winding up upside down. Rather than attempting to right itself, the Corkoink tucked its legs in, released a blast of smoke from the pipes on it head, and spun itself into a surprisingly fast roll. Orvtre dodged out of the way, but Rho instead elected to stand his ground and catch it. It pushed him almost to the opposite wall before grinding to a halt, at which point Rho punched it away. Its legs came back out to get its bearings, and as it stood back up it released even more smoke from its pipes, creating a thick enough cloud to obscure it from vision. It occurred to me that the entire room is getting pretty smoky.

"We really have to do something about those pipes, or we'll be breathing pure smog in a few minutes," I coughed through the cloud. A loud blast was all the alert I got to the incoming projectile, but fortunately Rune had already given me a shield. Didn't stop the ringing in my ears when it detonated, though.

I'd rather that Sigma and Rho didn't have to breathe in too much of this smoke, to be honest. Sigma's probably the worst off from this smoke, Rho uses fire often and is probably around smoke a decent amount so he should be comparatively less affected, I don't need to breathe, and I'm not sure if Rune needs to breathe. Does she? I've never seen her make a breathing motion. Maybe I should ask her later.

Speaking of Rune, she's taken steps in reducing the severity of the smoke problem, by making the room bigger, so to speak. And when I say making the room bigger, I mean she's currently blasting holes in the room like crazy, while also hurling magic bolts at the Corkoink itself once in a while. Credit where credit is due, however: Rune has exercised restraint in making sure to avoid blasting the others by accident.

As I hurled electricity bolts and magma blasts at the Corkoink, I thought about what to do about those smoky pipes. The first thing that came to mind was freezing the pipes with my ice powers, however Rho's fire, as well as my lava, makes that a bad idea. Okay, other options, other options...

Okay, here's another idea: I think it's time to use a power I haven't had a chance to break out too often. Just have to get within range.

I'll give the Corkoink credit: Between its cannon blasts and its dweevil legs movements, it was moving around enough so I couldn't get a shot at its pipes.

I got my opportunity soon enough however, as Rune hit the Corkoink with a particularly strong magic blast, immobilizing the Corkoink long enough for my to use my petrification Ultra Bitter Spray power on its pipes.

"This is just a quicky-fix to the smoky pipes problem," I noted. "If anyone has any better ideas, I'd like to hear them."

Any replies the others made were cut off when the Corkoink fired off more cannon blasts, this time even faster than before. Okay, so it seems that the Corkoink is short-tempered, and that petrifying its pipes angered it. Okay.

Besides, the Corkoink could probably just expel the smoke another way, plus the smoke producing organ inside the Corkoink (the root cause of the smoke) is still active. We probably need a way to disable said root cause... I'm not a surgeon/veterinarian/someone who knows the inner working of these lab creatures.

Perhaps Bloodriver, Gamma, or Orbin might have some insight into the inner workings of this creature, maybe? It at least seems possible that they might find a clue or something, though I admit this is far outside what they normally work with.

I suppose we should at least give them a call then. I laid down more petrification sprays and electric bolt suppressive fire, as I called the aforementioned trio via my Hero Band. Let's see what they have to say.

Getting burned by this thing repeatedly ain't exactly my idea of fun. Maybe it's Mithril's, but it ain't mine. Had right about enough of getting burning goo to the face.

So the next time the Animus started focusing on Mithril, I simply stomped straight up to it as it fired more of those goo blasts at her. When I got close to it, it turned its attention to me, generated a big blade of goo from one of its arms, and swung that at me. I let it hit me in the side of my chest, where it simply stopped.

"That all ya got?" I snarled at it, grabbed the blade, and pulled. A big chunk of the club part of its arm came off with it. Unfortunately that also unleashed a spray of red goo all over me and goddamn does this s*** sting.

Fortunately Broxigar and Mithril were perfectly happy to take advantage of the opening, as Brox threw his axe at the Animus, while Mithril encased it in - wait for it - an explosive metal casing. Being as I was still right next to it, the blast kinda rattled my eardrums a bit.

The Dark Animus, to the credit of whoever built it, was still standing even after that attack, though the rest of the left arm had been blown away, the exposed socket now spraying red goo everywhere. I question how it has so much of that crap to throw around, didn't seem like there was that much in all those other golems...

With the Animus now lacking an arm, however, Mithril was all too happy to go for the weaker side, still dipping in and out of range of the electric blast which, might I remind you, I've been taking to the face this whole time. Suppose I don't get to complain, seeing as nobody told me to go stand close to it, that was my own dumb idea.

As a further credit to the builder, the Animus was apparently smart enough to not try to hit me directly anymore, preferring to pepper me with more anima sludge and back away any time I to tried to approach. It's gotta run out of room eventually, though, this lab can only go so deep.

Okay, so the Dark Animus is focusing on me again. Since I'm pretty good at dodging goo blasts (especially at this range), the Dark Animus began spamming that enclosing ring of spheres attack at me, and it had somewhat better success with that.

However, as I was dodging about, I was also creating metal stuff as I moved. Exploding fire motorcycles? Check. Laser sharks with machine guns that shoot swords? Check. The UBERSPEAR? Well, no actually, the Dark Animus is putting enough pressure on me that I can't really make that huge thing right now.

Oh yeah, and Brox is chipping away at the thing with axe throws, and Zeta's menacingly approaching it. It was after one time where the Dark Animus almost backed into a dead-end that it switched its attention away from me again.

After looking through my wide array of attacks, I decided to whip out something while the Dark Animus was trying to pepper Brox with goo blasts.

"Ferro Fang Cannon!" I roared, morphing one of my arms into the aforementioned cannon with too many teeth and blasting it with the intent of tearing chunks off of it.

Did I mention that I added a bit of fire and explosions to that one? ...Okay okay, I added more than "a bit".

Pluto seems prepared to deal with this... "Pepe" fellow, so I've decided to simply move on. After all, he can't control the city's leader if she has a gaping hole in her skull.

With most of the Boyz caught up fighting each other, this'll be easier said than done. Not by much, though. We are the Stealth Squad after all. A few of my Boyz are tangled in that mess back there, sure... but most of them have done as we usually do: creep around the outer edge and look for opportunities. They're pretty easy to find when we've got Barrack directing everyone.

I pinged the psionic network, looking for good targets. Nobody has located Vashj yet, so until she turns up I suppose I'm going after the chain of command. Slipping through the chokepoints is easy enough; pop someone here, direct the Boyz to slit some throats there, and besides, there's a lot of attention being directed at Pepe's little brawl back there.

Moving around proceeded to become even easier as I made my way further in, coming to the actual populated sections of the city. Living quarters, larger buildings, the works. The city's center. An urban environment has always been more my speed, and it gives me more spaces to sneak about.

Ducking behind an overhang to avoid a passing patrol, another Black Pikmin faded into existence next to me. Phase, one of the best of the Stealth Squad. I whirled a finger in the air and mimed a line across my neck, and he simply nodded and vanished from sight again. Now I have someone to cover my path.

Now then... let's see if I can take out Vashj before Blackfuse makes his entrance into the city.

There was one thought gnawing away at Pluto.

Even now, as Pluto stabbed a Blue Pikmin through the head and shot another one down with a Bolter, even in the midst of this battle, even in the midst of being grazed by a hydrocannon blast, that thought still remained.

Wasn't Pepe Waccabrada supposed to be dead?

He had seen his corpse firsthand, Pluto thought. His bleeding, unmoving body impaled on a stalagmite near the outskirts of an underground city. Pluto had personally finished him off, after a long, ugly series of events he did not wish to recall.

There, by the outskirts of a city ruled by the World Nobles, Pluto had to run. To escape. He was being pursued, by-

... This was not the time for flashbacks. Pluto had to get past these controlled Pikmin.

And then, Pluto had to run. To chase down Pepe Waccabrada. And end him once more.

While I've been largely content to just watch - much more interesting from this perspective - I have been keeping a close eye on the Corkoink. I've only ever seen a little of this thing before this point, after all.

The quickest thing I can tell is that it's probably none too happy about having those pipes plugged up. I can see its skin reddening and even a few places swelling and releasing a bit of steam. As Orvtre called up Gamma's team, I zipped over and mentioned that into his Hero Band, mostly because it's funnier than using mine.

"Ah, I've seen something like that before," Gamma mused, "Biomechanical creatures like that sometimes have issues with heat dispersal. I don't think the pipes are for making smoke so much as dumping heat, so if you keep it active, it'll probably just overheat itself into unconsciousness."

"Or explode," I noted. "Whichever comes first."

"That's less likely," Gamma replied as Orvtre and I dodged an artillery shot from the Corkoink. It was promptly distracted by Rho getting in its face. "Creatures like that tend to have built-in safeties, to make sure they don't kill themselves. It's a symbiotic relationship, and the machine doesn't want to die either."

Bloodriver cut in from the other end, "But you have to consider that it's a lab-created creature. It may not have those safeties, or they may have been removed intentionally."

"So either it passes out or blows up. I'd prefer one of those much more than the other," Orvtre muttered, launching a wave of fire in the Corkoink's direction.

"Hey, while we have you on the line," Orbin called over the Band, "Would any of you happen to know what the 'color of heroism' is?"

"Gold," I replied automatically. You could ask Libera that question and he'd talk your damn ear off about it. I'd know. Orvtre cut off the connection and gave the Corkoink a long look.

"So, heat it up and take a chance, or go for something different?" I said, simply putting the dilemma into words. Rho and Sigma have its attention and Rune seems to be doing a good enough job of keeping them mostly unharmed, so we've got a moment to chat.

"Since I'd rather not have the Corkoink explode, I think we should go for something different," I muttered. "And I have an idea on what to try."

Using one of the Hero Band's broadcast functions, I gave the other Hero Squad members a general idea of our gameplan. The idea was this: Due to several previous incidents involving civilians and Grav going bonkers, we've developed a prototype to neutralize Pikmin without causing permanent injury.

The problem is that it was originally designed to neutralize Pikmin, not, well, the Corkoink. Should at least be worth a shot.

Rune and I loaded up the aforementioned neutralization power prototype that we developed, and we fired off several initial shots at it.

Initial observations: It appears to be working ok. We'll need to apply more of it to neutralize the Corkoink than if we had decided to apply mainly standard damage, and it'll probably take longer.

The Corkoink responded to that with more cannon blasts. I dodged a bit and helped throw up some barriers along with Rune.

At this point we also had Sigma and Rho punch it more to speed up the process a bit. The "overheat the Corkoink into unconsciousness" path at this point is mostly just a backup option.

Been thinking a bit about this thing. This goo it's been firing, it burns, but not like fire... more like an electrical burn. Not certain of the significance of that.

Either way, it's not really gonna matter in a few minutes, the Animus is on its last legs. Last arm? Whatever, not important. The important thing is that's it's going down. With so many pieces of its armor broken off, it was now leaking that goo from all over, which kinda makes it difficult to approach. Fortunately it stopped releasing those pulses of energy that it was earlier; guess it needed something that was in the arm Zeta tore off.

Mithril was still hammering away at it, pushing it further and further back and taking chunks out of it with each blow, so I'd say it's time to finish this.

"Mithril, heads up!" I yelled across the room, heaving my axe over my head and tossing it, whirling, towards the Animus. Mithril ducked under it and clad the whole thing in metal just as it made impact with the large orb in the golem's middle, sticking there but not quite piercing. Not until Zeta jumped up and punched it, slamming it clear through to the other side... and through the wall behind it. the Dark Animus, critically damaged, slumped back against said wall with a thunderous crash, bringing the wall down with it.

"Woo! Best possible result!" Mithril crowed, stomping over the Animus's remains. It twitched a few times before ceasing to move. The sprawling halls we'd made our way through to this point had seemed to lead to a dead end before the wall came down, and on the other side...

"Huh. Don't see that every day," I muttered as I made my way in. It was a large, circular room that was quite tall... and apparently quite deep, considering the gigantic hole that comprised the middle of the room. Peaking down into the hole revealed what looked like an array of machinery, pulses of electricity flowing between them. I couldn't say how deep it went. Hanging from the ceiling above the hole were four enormous, translucent discs that Mithril was currently amusing herself with by flying through the small openings in the middle of them.

"s***, how big is this place?" I wondered idly, looking back at the way we'd come in. Was it really that large? How could this room have not been obvious from the exterior?

"This is not part of the rest of the lab," Alpha noted, causing me to jump. Dude doesn't talk much and it's always a bit of a shock when he does. "It is older... much older."

"How old are we talking here?" Zeta asked him, Mithril swooping by to listen in.

"Early formation of the planet old. The lab may have been built simply to find this," Alpha explained, drifting toward what looked like a console at the edge of the hole. I noted six other nodes situated at the edges, though they looked different. Alpha examined the console for a moment before slowly shaking his head.

"It seems to be inactive at the moment."

"Seems to me like something Rune would be interested in," Mithril mentioned, drifting around the discs again. "Feels like it has a lot of power in it, some kinda generator maybe? Bet it'd be useful if we got it up and running."
