Administrative detention is based on secret suspicions, secret evidence and no charges being brought. To conceal its inherent absurdity, hearings are held in-camera and away from the public eye. As such, even the little that is revealed to the defense remains prohibited for publication.

I was held in detention for 3 days in 2012. I hope that the condi
tions have gotten better.

To think that I laughed, a long time ago, reading Joseph Heller's Catch 22, and Yossarian's deliberately insane mail censorship…
This doesn't look so funny anymore, the methods used by Israel (intimidation of international judges, sabotage of national judiciary, a convicted criminal heading the police, arbitrary « Nacht und Nebel » disappearance of persons, subordination of the State interests to a religious minority even if they breed like mad), blanket cover-up and protection of settler thugs, deportation and genocide on the originary populations, loyalty blackmail against the Diaspora, etc. etc., all of this makes me ask once more : was use was defeating the nazis at such cost to us Jews just to have our supposed refuge turn into the 3rd Reich mk. 2 ?
I'm a Jew and proud of my origins, my identity and my culture. But like many others in the Diaspora, never will I make aliyah to this travesty of Israel. The extremists will say « good riddance », and I will say the same to them.

A better one is they are worst and Israeli leaders all come from Eastern Europe and Russia! Their real names .Ben Gurion born "Gruen" Russia, Netanyahu family name "Mileikowski"-Poland, M. Sharett= "Shertok"- Ukraine, L Eshkol= "Shkolnik"-Ukraine, Y. Allon= "Piekowitz"-Russia, Golda= "Mabovitch"-Ukraine, Y Rabin= "Rubotzov"- Russia, Y Shamir="Jaziernicky"-Poland, A. Sharon= "Scheinerman"- Russia. Its a good thing US Neo Cons don't know they hate Russian's, former Poles and Ukrainian's are defacto Russians as well!

Sounds like the prison system in the US. The more I read about and observe about Israel I can't but conclude that Israel is a criminal and lawless country and has been since its founding. What in the world ever justified calling Israel 'a light onto the nations''? A nightmare more likely. The descendants of a people who have died or barely survived the holocaust are behaving and acting just like the oppressors their ancestors suffered under. Sad and disgusting. Israelis should be ashamed of themselves and do some serious introspection. However, I'm afraid it's too late for that, they too far gone.

I agree with the some of the sentiments expressed but the generalisations suggest that all Israelis are like this (eg "Israelis should be ashamed of themselves"). This is, of course, unfair to the many Israelis who are fighting these injustices, including the staff of Haaretz. Part of the problem with prejudice is over generalising. Not all Americans support Trump, not all Palestinians support Hamas, and neither do all Israelis support Netanyahu and his terrible government. So, please be specific and targeted in your criticisms.

There is a lot about Nani Saleh in a book by Ben Ehrenreich, Life and Death in Palestine, Penguin, 2016. I find the article obtuse and bizarre. Why is there no explanation relating to what purports to be redactions? For detailed information on detainees cases and this administrative nightmare for Palestinians, see Michael Sfard, The Wall and the Gate, Metropolitan Books, 2018. Sfard writes occasional Opinion pieces for Haaretz.

The past, unfortunately, can sometimes be partially remedied but never expunged.
All we can do is to learn from it, look for new and better ways to move ahead and try not to make the same mistakes ever again.

"Administrative detention" is just another word for Gestapo methods, and is illegal in any state that takes the word "law" serious.
