Sounds like Medisecure disclosed a Cyber incident on 13 May which is likely the incident that the Australian Government is dealing with.
Some quick points:
- Largely, ransomware incidents are driven by financial motivations that are largely opportunistic.
- At this early stage it seems unlikely this was anything other than a pretty routine cyber crime attack, but we can't know for sure yet.
- Health data, as we have seen with the Medibank incident is popular data for cyber criminals, with extortion attempts common due to the expectancy of attacks that payment will be high and swift by victims.
- Overall, remain Alert not alarmed, while we wait for the Australian authorities to work through this incident.
