Very hard to have a worthwhile discussion about the merits of dropping nuclear bombs on two Japanese cities without first understanding the depth of Imperial Japan’s viciousness, depravity, and truly nazi-level evil. Of the Americans currently voicing opinions on this, likely less than 1% know what monstrosities Japan was guilty of in Nanking, its atrocities in the Philippines, or the fact that Japan had a straight up biological weapons facility (unit 731) that tested the most awful pathogens on earth on thousands of helpless captives, did mutilation surgeries, watched “patients” slowly, horrifically die in agony- induced by medical staff. You know what kind of nation allies with the Nazis, invades over a dozen countries, systematically rapes and murders civilians all across Asia, and injects prisoners with bubonic plague just to see what happens? The kind that deserved to be bombed into unconditional surrender with any and all available tools- including nuclear weapons. Add to that the million US casualties that would have resulted from an invasion of the Japanese home islands, and the calculus was clear. Truman made the right decision.
