https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HEDHMZ-WHg
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20240329/k10014405881000.html
https://corporate.starto.jp/s/e/news/detail/10006?ima=3916
https://nordot.app/1051439582354833515?c=899922300288598016

- Correct the Display of the American Flag on Uniforms and VehiclesI am deeply moved by the symbolism of our national flag. The way it is displayed, especially on uniforms and vehicles, holds significant meaning for me. Currently, when shown on the right side of uniforms or vehicles, our flag is reversed. This tradition suggests that wind is pushing it back as the person or vehicle goes to someone’s aid. While this sentiment isn't inherently negative, I believe it could be more impactful to display our country's strength through an unwavering flag.Displaying a reversed flag only happens on a flagpole - but should this be mirrored in other contexts? The answer isn't simply blowin’ in the wind; we need to take action.According to U.S Army Regulation 670-1: Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, "The American flag patch is to be worn, right or left shoulder, so that “the star field faces forward," implying movement towards conflict (source: U.S Army Regulation 670-1). However, this interpretation may not resonate with everyone. It's time we reconsider how we display our national symbol. Let's show that our country has strength through its steadfast representation - not one pushed backward by winds of change but one standing firm against them. Please sign this petition if you agree that we should correct how the American Flag is displayed on uniforms and vehicles – showing strength rather than weakness.Read moreSign the petition

100 Supporters - Stop NC Senate From Banning Face Masks - NC House Bill 237House Bill 237 is a potential North Carolina bill that aims to ban face coverings of all types in public. This includes medical face masks, hoods, costume masks, helmets, balaclavas, and potentially even scarves if worn improperly. The stated goal of the bill is to reduce "violent protesting and crime," in light of the recent college campus protests regarding the Israel-Hamas war. However, it has the potential to have a much worse impact on the general public of North Carolina. Everyone in North Carolina will be impacted by this bill if it passes, however immunocompromised and disabled people are going to be hit the hardest. The banning of masks in public places makes the public inaccessible to people who need to wear masks. This bill will also cause those who are currently contagious with things like Influenza, COVID-19, the common cold, etc, to spread it to others due to the fact that they cannot wear masks in public. Whether it be someone who wears a mask due to chemotherapy, or to hide a facial difference, or even someone who has a cold and doesn’t want to infect others, everyone will be affected by this. This bill is also infringing on people’s 1st amendment right to freedom of speech through clothing. Some people are more comfortable in public with a face covering such as a mask or hood. This is both harmless and a constitutional right. Labeling these people as criminals is unfair, unjust and unconstitutional. To allow the government to regulate what you can wear is the exact opposite of freedom. Even if you were or are against masks for yourself, you should be able to see that an outright ban on them is completely unconstitutional and un-American. The North Carolina Senate is actively reviewing this bill, so now is the time to get it vetoed or overturned. Please contact your local and state representatives and ask them to overturn House Bill 237. Read moreSign the petition

75 Supporters - Stop the Hunter Tier Housing Project in MamaroneckThis petition aims to record the objections to the proposed Hunter Affordable Housing. Top Concerns 1) Focus On Flooding - Flood Mitigation has been a major concern of village residents for years. This need to be prioritized over a new development targeting non-residents. 2) Emergency and Other Critical Services - Fire, Police, Post Office and EMS have voiced concerns: they do not have the resources for more residents and the location of this development could impact access for emergency services. 3) Parking - This project will significantly reduce the number of public parking spots available to residents and patrons supporting the businesses on the avenue. 4) Schools – The schools are already over capacity. School budgets, classroom sizes, and teachers are not prepared to take on an additional influx of students. 5) Traffic – Traffic is already congested due to the proximity to the Avenue and Boston Post Road as well as traffic related to the police, fire, Emelin Theatre, municipal buildings, and post office. The traffic at this location during commuting hours will come to a standstill. 6) Process - The process is extremely concerning. The RFP process was a blank slate so developers could share their visions, unconstrained by any concerns for the village or town. No impact studies addressing the basic concerns outlined above have been made generally available. There is no transparency into the economics for this development: how much is the developer paying for this land? How much will be collected in taxes from the new residents? The Village has no professional representation to evaluate the best use for this property which has been a point of disagreement between Sharon Torres (village mayor), Nora Lucas (deputy village mayor), and the Village attorney, on the one hand, and the three other members of the board of trustees, on the other, including Lou Young who stated that he is ready to vote on this matter now. Additionally, when the library was built, a detailed and thoughtful RFP was put together in collaboration with the community, resulting in 14 competitive bids. The board has fast tracked Hunter without a thoughtful process, resulting in just two bids and very concerned residents. 7) Conflict of Interest -There are number of conflicts of interest. One of the three members of the Board of Trustees who is in favor of the development (Manny Rawlings) was a defendant in a landlord and tenant lawsuit filed by the favored bidder (Washingtonville Housing Alliance, who submitted a proposal with Westhab, Inc) and has been ordered by the judge to pay to Washingtonville Housing Alliance the amounts due. A second member of the Board of Trustees (Leilani Yizar-Reid) stated at the March 24 Board of Trustee Meeting (starting at 1:02:15): "I cannot afford to live here. I will benefit from greatly from living in that place. Me. So how will it benefit people? It will benefit me." All conflicted members of the board who may gain personally should not vote. They should not be acting in their own interests. 8) Economic Impact - With no clear evidence of any revenue streams (including from the disposition of the land, or on an ongoing basis, from taxes collected from the development), many homeowners are concerned that their taxes will increase to foot the costs to expand our infrastructure to accommodate these new residents. In the short term, with a stretched infrastructure and lowering school test scores, the value of our homes will decrease. 9) Who Gets to Live at Hunter Tier – Mamaroneck residents are being misled about the eligibility rules for these units. The housing will be available on a LOTTERY BASIS to people meeting the financial criteria (which ranges from 30% AMI to 120% AMI with the Area Median Income (AMI) for all of Westchester County being $146,800) and who currently live in the 9 county area including Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, and Fairfield Counties and all five boroughs of New York City. Residents of Mamaroneck will NOT be prioritized. 10) Need for Affordable Housing - We meet the requirements for affordable housing; this is not a necessity. Given the other issues and concerns, this should not be a priority of the board of trustees. 11) Mandate of the Board - According to the general power granted to the village board of trustees, under section 4–412 of the New York State Village law, their powers should be exercised for what is deemed expedient or desirable for, among other things: "the safety, health, comfort, and general welfare of its inhabitants [and] the protection of their property". Given the cost and the compromise to infrastructure, this development offers no benefit to any homeowner in Mamaroneck; there is also no benefit to any person renting in Mamaroneck unless that person wins the lottery for a new home in this development and so to push this project seems outside of the mandate of the board. In conclusion, who does this project benefit? Based on the information available, we lose a valuable asset, we over-burden the infrastructure (including schools as well as emergency and other critical services), we lose parking, we increase tax-payer costs and we decrease home values all the while whilst disregarding current concerns of the residents of Mamaroneck (including flooding and poor existing infrastructure). As residents of Mamaroneck, we demand this project be put aside until a more thoughtful approach can be taken in collaboration with the community. Please sign this petition if you share these views.Read moreSign the petition

843 Supporters - Halt the Ongoing Genocide in CongoAs someone who believes deeply in the sanctity of human rights, I am appalled and heartbroken by the ongoing genocide in Congo that has been occurring since 1984. This is not just a political issue, but a humanitarian crisis that tugs at the very fabric of our shared humanity. It is an affront to any God-fearing individual and even to God itself. The United Nations reported that more than five million people have died as a result of war-related causes in Congo since 1998, making it one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II (source: United Nations). This staggering number does not even account for those who have suffered from displacement, sexual violence, or other forms of physical and psychological trauma.Despite numerous peace agreements and interventions by international bodies over the years, violence continues unabated with little accountability for those responsible. The world cannot stand idly by while such atrocities continue. We must urge our leaders to take decisive action against this ongoing genocide. We must demand justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators. We must insist on immediate humanitarian aid for those affected by this horrific conflict.By signing this petition, you are taking a stand against gross human rights violations and sending a clear message that such atrocities are unacceptable in our global society. 894 Supporters - Letter of Support for Professor Valeria Herrera | A Call to ActionThis letter is a call to action from a coalition of current Syracuse University School of Architecture students and alumni, in defense of Assistant Teaching Professor Valeria Herrera and the recent discrimination lawsuit filed against the School of Architecture. Initially stunned and outraged when we learned that the SOA had decided to end Professor Herrera’s employment at the school, recent knowledge of this lawsuit has triggered a shockwave of relief and appreciation amongst the student and alumni community for the bravery of Professor Herrera in revealing sentiments gone unspoken for much too long. This letter is a response to the silence of the administration and their actions taken to suppress Professor Herrera. This collective voice of past and current students is aware of the school’s discriminatory and hurtful actions towards Herrera over the years. Valeria Herrera is a beloved and deeply respected professor, a role model to so many, an alumnus of the School of Architecture and an SOA Britton Medal winner. Her drawing courses have a legendary status in the school and her uncompromising and dedicated support for students, their education, personal confidence, and wellbeing is palpable in everything she does. Valeria is a fierce advocate for students and has been a mentor to innumerable students, those who know her and have had the privilege of being her student, as well as those who admire her from afar. Her representation as a Latina faculty member, the only full-time Latina on the faculty during her years in the SOA, is critical and invaluable to so many underrepresented individuals. In addition to her teaching and openly generous character, she has served for years as the faculty representative for the SOA chapter of the award-wining National Organization of Minority Architecture Students. She is a role-model that we cannot afford to lose. The undersigned students and alumni strive to hold the current administration accountable and hopefully motivate more action from current faculty, students, alumni, and external colleagues who share our same concerns. We have clearly come to a breaking point with the treatment of Professor Herrera. As Herrera has shown us the possibility for action to be sparked, we students require further action to be made within the school to right a history of grievances, abuses, and opportunism. The loss of Herrera's teaching sends an alarming message about the state of the school and the administration’s questionable commitment to diversity, advocacy, integrity, and the cultivating of an inclusive and equitable work environment. Within the school there exists a culture of silence among the faculty, staff, and students alike which has negatively impacted morale throughout the SOA. Our administration seems to have isolated the School of Architecture outside of the normal realm of accountability and support that the broader university usually provides to students and professors in other departments. When Herrera has taught the ARC 181 course it has soared to heights, including media coverage, that celebrated the quality, collaboration, and diversity focus that she brought to the required freshman drawing course. She introduced the idea of activism and community in her teaching in drawing and in her award-winning thesis advising. Why did the school prevent Herrera from continuing in this role as the ARC 181 drawing professor, a role she so successfully performed and that she passionately desired to continue? We think the answer is obvious. Her repression by the SOA administration is both a symbolic and practical suppression of the students who benefit from her unique and invaluable presence in the school. She brings an optimistic and positive voice and spirit in her advocacy for the heard and the seen and the unheard and the unseen. She is special, we know it, and they know it. Feelings of anger have spurred from news of the School of Architecture’s decision to not renew Herrera’s employment contract. Students have reported that her renewal was fully supported by the Fall 2023 SOA Teaching Professor Evaluation Committee with a unanimous vote of support and a very supportive letter by that committee, enthusiastically recommending that her full-time contract be renewed. We mourn the loss of the sacred environment she nurtured and for the extreme quality of the teaching, support, and mentorship she provides to students every day. One could imagine the shocking acts of oppression articulated in the Daily Orange’s article on the lawsuit, would make it nearly impossible for Professor Herrera to do her job as an educator. Yet in the face of an unsupportive administration who lacks sufficient respect and regard for her general wellbeing, she still shows up every day to serve her students and her school in the freshman design studio, in her elective drawing seminar, in her Source Grant Advising, in her role as NOMAS advisor and in her SOA committee assignments. She continues to inspire the minds of all her students and bring light to the studios that we are proud to call home in her presence. A fear that many alumni and current students feel is the realization that future students will not receive the same sort of care towards the development of their architectural education that Professor Herrera has provided and this has left many current and past students to question the education the school has promised to offer. Students are worried about the implications of a school that favors so many part-time instructors and professors with little if any prior teaching experience and who are paid lower wages, over full-time professors, and experienced educators. For years, the school has ignored the voice of the students and seems to have made curious staffing decisions and have repressed and dismissed of valuable professors who do not perfectly align with the administration’s vision. We feel that this has negatively impacted the quality of our education. In roughly the last year the SOA has lost four professors at the rank of Full Professor and has followed that by not renewing the contracts of four full-time Assistant Teaching Professors, including Herrera, eliminating eight full-time and experienced professors in total. The SOA claims Herrera and her full-time colleagues were not renewed because of curriculum changes that leave the school without enough courses for them to teach, doing so whilst continuing to hire numerous part-time faculty. Professor Herrera fosters an intensity in critical design thought within a collaborative and supportive studio environment. Her teaching nourishes a motivation to do our best while helping us to maintain a healthy work-life balance – a testament to the genuine care she has for her students. The student body holds the highest level of respect and admiration for her work as an artist, professor, mentor, role-model, and cultural force. We have invested such a large portion of our lives in a school that promised a safe, supportive, academically rigorous space when we were first applying for admission. Now, many students are left with feelings of uncertainty and disappointment for the ultimate value of the education provided to them. The outlying pride we feel for our time at Syracuse University lies with the meaningful connections we’ve made with our peers and the handful of professors left at Syracuse with genuine passion such as Professor Valeria Herrera. It is in opposition to the will of the students and alumni, that she has been terminated from employment at the SOA. This action by the school weakens the educational context and content and strips the students of an invaluable and esteemed educator. It sends another clear signal that the school has moved in a direction that does not best support the quality of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, its brand, and its fiercely guarded and dedicatedly maintained global reputation as a top tier school of architecture. We call upon Syracuse University and the greater architecture community hold the School of Architecture to a higher degree of accountability for their actions. We will no longer allow our voices to remain whispers in the wind.Read moreSign the petition

394 Supporters - Mental Heatlh Days for College StudentsThe ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) was passed in 1990 and amended in 2008. This policy prohibits discrimination against anyone with mental/physical disabilities in many areas including public places, private schools, employment, and universities. Colleges that receive federal financial assistance or allow students the opportunity to obtain financial aid must comply with ADA policies. The main purpose of the ADA is to make it easier for individuals with disabilities to stay protected in various forms. Title 2 states that anyone with mental/physical disabilities will have equal access to postsecondary schools, colleges can not ask if an individual has a disability, deny admission, or exclude from classes, activities, or programs because of a disability. Title 3 (Accommodations) prohibits discrimination in a broad range of contexts such as any public accommodations, or places that offer examinations for students to obtain certifications, licensing, education, or employment. Whether the individual’s mental/physical disability is dormant or active the individual is protected under the ADA. According to the ADA college students with mental/physical disabilities can request accommodations, if left untreated would limit the individual’s ability to perform/resume activities such as communication, regulating thoughts, concentration, or interacting with peers. I am advocating for Black Hills State University along with all colleges in South Dakota to join many other colleges in states such as Illinois, Maine, Virginia, Utah, Orgon, Iowa, Massachusetts, Washington, California, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Connecticut, and Kentucky in supporting mental health days for college students. Mental health days can be supported under Title 3 of the ADA. Mental health days are crucial for maintaining a balance between overall health/well-being and academic access. While many states/colleges have adopted new policies to provide students with adequate means of dealing with mental health issues others like South Dakota have yet to jump on board. They fail to invest the time and resources necessary for mental/emotional support within the colleges. Black Hills State University along with all colleges in South Dakota should offer mental health days to support/accommodate students with mental/physical disabilities. Allowing students to take two or three mental health days per semester can improve mental illness, which highly impacts students’ academic success. Mental health days address students’ mental illness whereas normal sick days mainly focus on students’ physical illness. Mental health days can help reduce the stigma around mental health that prevents students from seeking professional help. Mental health days can also promote overall well-being, prevent burnout, improve academic success, teach self-care, and encourage students to seek professional help. Read moreSign the petition

7 Supporters - Grant Compassionate Release for My Incarcerated GrandfatherMy grandfather, a man who has spent the last 30 years of his life behind bars, is now blind and old. He was sentenced to 25 years to life after losing a trial. Today, he is incapable of committing crimes due to his physical condition and age. Despite this, he remains incarcerated while others who have committed far more severe crimes receive lesser sentences. The justice system that was supposed to protect him failed him instead. This is not just about my grandfather; it's about the countless other elderly inmates who are serving time beyond their physical capabilities. According to the ACLU, elderly prisoners are the fastest-growing group in U.S prisons with an increase of 1,300% since the early 1980s (ACLU report on Aging Prison Population). These individuals pose little threat to society but continue to live out their final days behind bars.My plea is personal but also represents a larger issue within our justice system - one that disproportionately punishes without considering individual circumstances or changes over time. It's time we reconsider how we treat our aging prison population and start implementing measures like compassionate release for those who no longer pose a threat.I urge you all - as fellow citizens concerned with fairness and justice - sign this petition calling for my grandfather's release from prison where he has served enough time already. Let us give him a chance at freedom in his remaining years.Read moreSign the petition

We have had medical professionals thoroughly examine Elliot's medical file, and they have provided clear explanations for his complex medical conditions, which ultimately led to his passing. It is evident that these conditions were beyond our control and not due to any negligence or malicious intent on Grace Chan's part. Elliot suffered from severe vitamin d deficiency, rickets, evidence of a seizure, blood clots, Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), also called fetal growth restriction (FGR), and required surgery for multiple hernias. Multiple maternal fetal medicine specialists, who oversaw Grace Chan's high-risk pregnancy, had strongly recommended terminating Elliot at various stages. However, driven by our profound faith and hope, we stood by our decision to give him a chance at life. It is crucial to acknowledge that the doctors' advice underscores the undeniable complexity of our circumstances and the challenges we faced during this pregnancy. Grace Chan's extended absence from our family has inflicted severe emotional distress upon our surviving children. Our 5-year-old daughter desperately yearns for her mother's presence, while our surviving son has been deprived of his mother's love and care during his formative years. The well-being and development of our children are at stake, with potential lasting consequences. Given these compelling factors along with our sixth amendment right that explicitly states that “the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy trial” and that a trial cannot be “unreasonably delayed”, we request immediate action to drop all charges against Grace Chan and facilitate her prompt release. The gravity of this situation goes far beyond our family's plight and has been unnecessarily delayed for over a year, and highlights the urgent need for justice and compassion within the judicial system. We also request that the evidence is thoroughly reviewed and an unbiased reevaluation of this case is conducted. I would be more than willing to provide any additional evidence, testimonials, or expert opinions that may serve to strengthen our case and bring further clarity to this matter. I am confident that a comprehensive reassessment will affirm Grace Chan's innocence and allow her to return to her rightful place within our family. On behalf of our grieving family, I ask you to consider the profound consequences of continued detainment, not only for Grace Chan’s life but also for the well-being and future opportunities of our children. 10,121 Supporters - Tell Senator Brian P. Stack that NJ Needs More Transparency, Not LessUnion City Mayor & Senator Brian P. Stack is looking to pass Bill S2702 and is working to get it out of committee. This legislation amends current state law requiring that the salaries of certain County officers and employees be passed by ordinance. The amendment would allow for non-pensionable salary to be excluded from the ordinance mandate. In other words, top officials in County governments can pad their pay with fringe benefits and give themselves second and even third jobs, with no public oversight or regulation. To put this in perspective, a County Executive could decide that they would like to receive a housing allowance – or stipend. As the law currently is, the creation of this new benefit would have to go before the County Commissioners and be voted on and be put on the record for all to know. If this amendment leaves committee and is then passed, it will allow a County Executive to create this housing stipend without going before the County Commissioners and without it being voted for and put on the public record. This legislation comes at a time when the State legislation has gutted ELEC through the creation of the independent expenditure committee and is in the process of limiting access to the Open Public Records Act (OPRA). It is clear to me that the last thing we need is another layer of government to be increasingly shrouded in secrecy and pulling away from matters of public record. Instead, we need to remain dedicated to transparency and accountability. Passing this bill will allow Senator Stack to carry more favor and power that only benefits him and his circle - not the people of Jersey City and Hudson County. Sign and Share this petition to let Senator Stack now that people want a more transparent government, not less. Read moreSign the petition

70 Supporters - Stop the Privatization of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.DONATE to the Inner Harbor Coalition (***NOTE*** The "Chip In" donations after you sign the petition benefit Change.org, not Inner Harbor Coalition) GO HERE TO DONATE. The Inner Harbor. More than 50 years ago, the citizens of Baltimore recognized the area’s uniqueness, gifting it as a “public park for uses and benefit for this and future generations.” They made a promise to keep the space open for all "in perpetuity." Whether you’re from Baltimore or just one of the millions from around the world who have visited, everyone knows the Inner Harbor as a park: a spacious, lively waterfront where anyone - families, friends, kids, couples - can recreate, celebrate or just enjoy a scenic stroll along the water without spending a nickel. (above photo - the Inner Harbor today) Then the people voted in 1978 to let visionary Jim Rouse build Harborplace, a concept so wildly successful that it launched copycat developments from New York’s South Street Seaport to Sydney, Australia’s Harbourside. In 2009, the Urban Land Institute called it "the model for post-industrial waterfront redevelopment around the world." But with the two pavilions open to all, the Inner Harbor was still a park. Today, that’s in jeopardy. The grandfather of “festival marketplaces” stands neglected, a victim of real estate company mismanagement. But instead of restoring and celebrating their revolutionary centerpiece, Baltimore City’s politicians have conspired with a developer to tear down Harborplace and replace it with two office buildings and two luxury apartment towers, 25- and 30- stories tall. Sure, there will be stores and restaurants on the bottom, where paying guests will be welcome, but on top will be 900 apartments and water view suites. This is what the developer calls “design and vision…with equity at its core.” In a park. Not only will this scheme essentially privatize the northern half of the Inner Harbor—the city’s own solicitor statement says that “neither multifamily dwellings nor off-street parking are recreational uses that are available to the public” - it will irreparably harm the feeling of openness that gives the area its unique character: the gentle step-back from water to promenade to two-story pavilions to taller buildings framing the harbor. Investors, of course, will profit handsomely. Taxpayers not so much. In fact, to make the project work as proposed, the city’s Department of Finance says the developer will need $400-$500 million from taxpayers. Maryland? U.S.? Who knows! It’s all very hazy. To pull it off, the mayor needs to jettison the 1970s guardrails put in place to keep the land out of the hands of politicians and developers. The park will go from being the city’s most protected planning area to one with no zoning limits whatsoever. Baltimore residents and visitors alike should be outraged at the way this mayor is railroading this project through. And if Baltimore’s Crown Jewel—the only city park enshrined in the city charter—isn’t safe from politicians and developers, what park is? HELP US STOP THIS. HELP US PROTECT THE FUTURE OF BALTIMORE’S INNER HARBOR PARK. Sign our petition to demand that the mayor, city council and state and federal representatives of Baltimore reject this developer-led project and commit to an open, city-led process to determine what’s best for the Inner Harbor Park Contribute to help us pursue legal and political routes. 710 Supporters - Title: Petition for Justice: Free Kalvin Russell from Wrongful Conviction Description:Description: We are petitioning for justice on behalf of Mr. Kalvin Russell a lifetime citizen of Maywood, who has been wrongfully convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder. Mr. Russell is currently incarcerated at Cook County Department of Corrections following a bench trial in the Village of Maywood. Despite the absence of DNA or fingerprint evidence linking him to the crimes, Mr. Russell was found guilty based on flawed investigative procedures and incomplete evidence collection. Crucial aspects of the case, such as the failure to obtain a search warrant for another vehicle involved and the failure to investigate surveillance footage from nearby ring cameras, raise serious doubts about the integrity of the investigation and prosecution. Furthermore, the unlawful seizure of Mr. Russell’s cell phone during his arrest and the coercion of a key witness into providing false testimony further highlight the injustices suffered by Mr. Russell. Mr. Russell's sentencing is scheduled for June 3rd, and his lawyer plans to file a motion post-trial prior to appeal. We urge Mayor Nathaniel George Booker and the Village of Maywood to launch a comprehensive investigation into Mr. Russell’s case and to consider all available legal remedies to ensure that he receives a fair trial and due process rights guaranteed under the law. Join us in demanding justice for Kalvin Russell by signing this petition. Together, we can shine a light on this miscarriage of justice and work towards righting the wrongs that have been inflicted upon him. Thank you for your support. Read moreSign the petition

508 Supporters - Tell WCCUSD to restore Title 1 funding for Fairmont Elementary!Tell Superintendent Hurst and the School Board to restore Title 1 funding for Fairmont Elementary! ¡Restaurar los fondos del Título 1 de Fairmont! Restaure o financiamento do Título 1 do Fairmont! Edited: This is a free petition. Skip any steps that ask to “chip in” or donate. Those funds DO NOT go to Fairmont. As a Fairmont Elementary School parent, I am deeply concerned about West Contra Costa Unified School District's (WCCUSD) proposed plan to strip our school of its Title 1 status and cut $69,000 in Title 1 funds from our site budget. Under this plan, Fairmont students will lose access to essential services including teacher intervention and tutoring, counseling, online licenses to meet students’ unique needs, and supervision during lunch and recess. Teachers will lose funding for basics like classroom materials and supplies and professional development. $83,000 in total budget cuts for Fairmont next year The District plans to cut an additional $14,000 from Fairmont’s site budget, reducing our budget from $126,000 in 2023-2024 to $42,000 in 2024-2025. That's a 66% budget cut on top of staff layoffs! While we appreciate the need for fiscal responsibility, the District should not balance its budget by taking essential Title 1-funded resources from the Fairmont students who need them most. Our student body’s needs have not changed this year: we have the same percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced price meals as last year and over 30% of our students are English learners. As the second largest elementary school in WCCUSD, we have even more students with low incomes than 14 other schools in the District that will retain their Title 1 status. Fairmont has a proven track record of using Title 1 funds to support academic development in our students and to close the achievement gap. Our school has some of the highest student growth scores in the district. Title 1 funds are used to support the most basic supplies needed to learn and grow: paper, pencils, crayons, and toilet paper, but also the Accelerated Reader app that is a cornerstone of our literacy program. Title 1 funds have allowed us to open the field during recess and not rely on parent volunteers to ensure students are safe during recess. Title 1 funds support our dedicated teachers to work outside of school hours with English learner students and those with the highest needs. When a student needs extra help, the afterschool programs make a huge difference in their success. Loss of these resources will threaten Fairmont student safety, well-being, and academic success. We will have fewer resources to help our students catch up. By signing this petition, we, the undersigned Fairmont parents, students, teachers, and supporters call on Superintendent Hurst and WCCUSD School Board members Smith-Folds, Christian, Phillips, Gonzalez Hoy, and Reckler to restore Fairmont Elementary School’s Title 1 status and funding for the 2024-2025 school year.Read moreSign the petition

309 Supporters - Equitably Fund Pulaski International SchoolDear CEO Pedro Martinez, We are reaching out to express serious concerns regarding the new Chicago Public Schools (CPS) budget formula and its impact on the Regional Gifted Center for English Learners (RGCEL) at Pulaski International School. This program is a critical resource for gifted students from underserved communities, and the current funding model threatens its sustainability. The RGCEL program, serving students from historically marginalized communities, requires dedicated classrooms and specialized instruction. However, the new formula does not account for the unique challenges faced by these students, treating the RGCEL program's funding needs as equal to those of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. This undermines CPS' commitment to equitable education and contradicts previous assurances of support for such specialized programs. Moreover, the use of a single Opportunity Index (OI) for the entire school population does not reflect the distinct needs of the RGCEL students. We applaud CPS for making an equity-driven paradigm shift, and with that, a separate OI calculation for the RGCEL program would align with the district's equity goals and ensure the program receives the necessary funding and staffing. Pulaski’s RGCEL program is on the cusp of unprecedented growth. Compared to the previous year, our applications to Pulaski’s RGCEL program have doubled. During that same period, the number of families that have accepted a seat in our RGCEL program increased by more than 2.5 times. The recent increase in RGCEL program applications demonstrates the community's growing need and the program's potential for success with adequate support. We urge CPS to reconsider the funding allocation and provide the support necessary for the continued growth and excellence of the RGCEL program at Pulaski International School. We ask CPS to provide funding to Pulaski for the following for SY24/25: 1. One additional teacher position CPS promised to give the RGCEL program the same support as previous years if next year’s kindergarten class reached 20 or more students. This commitment must be honored, as we already have a kindergarten class of 25 (we expect full enrollment once late season evaluation results are released shortly). As of 5/9/24, Pulaski is slated to have 16 1st graders and 13 2nd graders in the RGCEL program for SY24/25. This already puts us past the maximum allowed class size of 28 for the K-3rd grade band. 2. A dedicated clerk for the modular building Pulaski’s two buildings are not connected, and a dedicated clerk for the modular building is necessary to provide our students with the safety and clerical needs for a school of our size. The modular building houses roughly 300 students, from kindergarten through 2nd grade. 3. Bussing for RGCEL students that live more than 1.5 miles from Pulaski. Unlike other Selective Enrollment (SE) schools, Pulaski’s RGCEL program was designed to bring equity to gifted, Spanish-speaking, students. Many of these students live in marginalized, under-resourced neighborhoods. Especially with the recent surge of migrant students into CPS, bussing an integral component so that Pulaski can serve all eligible students. This program is the embodiment of the equity that CPS claims to strive for. Families that joined the RGCEL program did so with a commitment that bussing would be provided. We look forward to working together to find a solution that supports the educational needs of our gifted English-language learners and upholds CPS' mission of equitable access to high-quality education. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, ..................................................... Atentamente,Read moreSign the petition

209 Supporters - Stop the halving of Traffic Lanes on Hollywood BlvdI am a resident of Los Feliz, Los Angeles who relies on Hollywood Blvd for my daily commute to work and taking my children to school. The proposed plan to reduce traffic lanes from 4 to 2 on this vital artery will have a significant impact on my life and those of many others in our community. As acknowledged by the head of transport for Nithya Raman, this change could result in a "carmageddon", increasing daily commutes by up to 10 minutes over just 2 miles. Over the next decade, that's an additional two months spent sitting in traffic - time that could be better spent with family or at work.In addition to creating longer commutes, this proposal will eliminate hundreds of parking spots and fail to address the increased traffic dangers and inconvenience on Franklin and Sunset. It does little for public safety while significantly disrupting lives. We must consider these impacts when deciding whether such changes are truly beneficial for our community. We urge city officials not only to reconsider this proposal but also involve us more directly in decisions about our transportation infrastructure. Please sign this petition if you oppose the halving of traffic lanes on Hollywood Blvd. Your signature can help prevent unnecessary disruption and maintain our quality of life in Los Feliz.Read moreSign the petition

215 Supporters - Addict treatment center in Fairmount - Halt opening until community engagementThe proposed opening of a drug treatment center in Fairmount, Philadelphia, PA, USA has raised significant concerns among local residents. This decision was made without any input or consultation with the community members who will be directly affected by it. Such centers can have both positive and negative impacts on communities. While they provide essential services to those in need, they can also lead to increased crime and potential safety concerns if not properly managed.According to data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), there are over 14,500 specialized drug treatment facilities in the United States. However, successful integration of these centers into communities often requires careful planning and open dialogue with residents. The lack of community engagement in this process is alarming. We believe that our voices should be heard before such significant decisions are made about our neighborhood's future. We urge local authorities to halt the opening of this drug treatment center until meaningful engagement with Fairmount's residents can take place. The community deserves an opportunity to understand more about this project and voice their concerns or support. Please sign this petition if you agree that no major changes should be implemented within our community without its involvement first.Read moreSign the petition

- Victory!Reinstate the Jerusalem String Quartet's Concertgebouw ConcertsWe, the undersigned, as musicians and presenters who celebrate mutual respect across different disciplines and specialisations, who regularly collaborate and who draw inspiration from one another, are appalled at the recent announcement of the Concertgebouw to cancel the May 16th and 18th performances by the Jerusalem Quartet. Threats to the safety of musicians, concert hall staff, and the general public, fly in the face of hard-won democratic values and freedom of expression, and should have no place in our society. The behaviour of our arts organisations should reflect this, and should stand up for these values. By cancelling these concerts, the management of the Concertgebouw placates a vocal minority who advocate for their cause through intimidation and credible threats of disorder and violence. We need not look very far back into European history to see what happens when people acquiesce to the very behaviours that sow their own downfall. Anything less than permitting the Jerusalem Quartet to continue with its planned performances — and to provide them and the audience of the Concertgebouw with protection and support — amounts to pure moral cowardice. We call upon the management of the Concertgebouw to show strength of character in defending the concert platform as a realm for free expression of the sublime yearnings of the human spirit otherwise failed by words and actions that all too often lapse into meaningless, pseudo-moral binaries. The Concertgebouw’s behaviour succumbs to an “education at the college of fools” rather than continuing to affirm itself as a bastion of the ineffable. We wholeheartedly protest this act and as musicians call for an immediate redress. Read more

13,356 Supporters - Victory!Urge Frederick County Board of Education to Preserve Music EducationI am a product of music education. From the moment I picked up an instrument in 3rd grade, my life was changed forever. The experiences and friendships that have come from being involved in music are invaluable and lifelong. It is with this personal perspective that I urge the Frederick County Board of Education to recognize that music education is not just an extracurricular activity, but a fundamental part of our curriculum.Music education has been proven to enhance cognitive abilities, improve academic performance, foster creativity and provide social-emotional benefits (National Association for Music Education). Yet despite these well-documented benefits, it is often one of the first areas targeted for cuts when budgets are tight.Any reduction in our music programs would have far-reaching implications. It would deny students the opportunity to develop their musical talents and rob them of a vital outlet for self-expression. Furthermore, it would undermine our community's cultural vitality. We must not let short-term financial considerations deprive future generations of these important benefits. We call upon the Frederick County Board of Education to uphold its commitment to comprehensive education by preserving our valued music programs. Please sign this petition today if you believe in keeping music alive within our schools, especially at the elementary level.Read more

1,015 Supporters - Victory!SAVE LAKE LOGAN IN HOCKING HILLSSince its creation in 1955, Lake Logan has been a sanctuary for our community, providing a source of joy, relaxation, and economic prosperity to the Hocking Hills, the most visited state park in Ohio. But today, our beloved lake is facing a crisis that threatens its very existence. It's time to come together as a community and take action to save Lake Logan. A Crisis That Spans Generations For nearly 70 years, Lake Logan has been the heart of our community, offering us moments of tranquility and connection with nature. Yet, the natural process of silting is causing the lake to disappear before our eyes. If left unaddressed, sedimentation will continue to accumulate, making the lake shallower, warmer, and overrun by vegetation. Weeds, fueled by sediment, will further choke the lake, leading to a grim fate as a swamp. Why Act Now? The urgency is clear. In the past 10 years, a very significant amount of silt and muck have blanketed our lake, causing an alarming overgrowth of vegetation that left many areas of the lake with less than three feet of water. Nothing, however, is more ominous than the accelerated rate with which the American Lotus has taken over its west side during the last two summers. Time is running out, and we must act today to prevent Lake Logan from slipping into the point of no return. What's at Stake? The loss of Lake Logan is not just a loss of natural beauty; it's a blow to our local economy, our livelihoods, and our overall quality of life in the Hocking Hills. The economic repercussions will be catastrophic, affecting businesses related to fishing, aquatic rentals, property rentals, beach concessions, and tourism. The environment will suffer too, impacting the delicate balance of flora and fauna around the lake. Our Path to Restoration - THE PETITION We've identified three crucial actions that can reverse Lake Logan's decline, but we need the support of our state and local officials to make it a reality through tangible allocation of funding. We, the undersigned, appeal to the State of Ohio, through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, to take the following measures: Expeditious Dredging: Remove years of significant accumulation of sediment from all areas of the lake (not just the upper pools) to achieve near original lake water depths. Long-Term Lake Management Plan: Implement a comprehensive lake management plan that ensures periodic timely maintenance, water quality testing, control of aquatic vegetation, and compliance with all Ohio Department of Natural Resources requirements, including but not limited to the division of Ohio State Parks and Watercraft. Dam Repair: Repair main outlet valve at the dam so the lake can be lowered to a winter pool like most ODNR lakes in Ohio. This is necessary to impair vegetative growth along the shoreline, minimize damage to boat docks, and facilitate boat dock construction and repair. These actions come with a high cost, but the price of inaction is immeasurable. Restoring vast areas of clean water will rejuvenate Lake Logan, bringing back the aquatic activities we cherish. How Can You Help Save Lake Logan? Sign This Petition: By adding your name, you're showing your commitment to Lake Logan's future. Join Our Association: Become a part of the Lake Logan Association and actively contribute to the restoration efforts. Spread Awareness: Share this petition and our cause with your friends, family, and community to build the support we need. Thank you for your support! The Lake Logan Association is a group of dedicated volunteers working tirelessly to restore and protect our beloved lake. Together, we can ensure that Lake Logan continues to be a source of joy, a haven for wildlife, and a cornerstone of our community for generations to come. Read more
